3 keys to a successful 2026 New York Rangers offseason

From the May 5 draft lottery to maximizing $27M in cap space, the Rangers have a narrow window to fix the roster. Here is the blueprint for a 2026-27 turnaround.

The New York Rangers have a busy offseason ahead of them. There are a number of things that have to go as perfectly as possible to increase the likelihood of success in 2026-27.

There are three big events coming up, and each is directly connected to the others. The Rangers have to make an impact off the ice to have more of an impact on it.

Let’s go over it.

Draft

The draft order is about to be released to the masses via the Draft Lottery on Tuesday. When that happens, there is a pretty good indication as to who the Blueshirts will be taking.

As of right now, this franchise holds the third-best odds of getting the first overall pick, and the ultimately prize of either Gavin McKenna or Ivar Stenberg. Should they stay put at their original spot, OHL defenseman Chase Reid is the consensus pick at that number.

Free Agency

The Rangers announced during this past season that they would go into a rebuild. This is where free agency will be a crucial part of this offseason’s plans.

There are a number of ways that the Blueshirts can play this, with the goal of improving the roster. Either they are going to go all-out this offseason, or wait and try and save some extra salary cap to get multiple high-value pieces after 2026-27.

Some notable UFA’s for them are as follows. Quinn Hughes, Nikita Kucherov and Vince Dunn could be worth acquiring in 2027-28.

Concrete plan for 2026-27

No matter if the Rangers feel as though whatever they do this offseason can get them into the playoffs or not, a concrete plan has to be made. Playing competitive has to be established from the start, or to lean on these younger players like Gabe Perreault and Tye Kartye.

The Rangers cannot be half-in, half-out again.

If these three things can go as smoothly as possible this offseason, we could be looking at a more stuructured and organization Rangers team when October begins. Eventually, this team has to go in the right direction, right?
