In the start of a four game homestand on Tuesday, Jan. 21st, the New York Rangers delivered everything a good hockey game has to offer.
From fights, amazing saves, dynamic plays, a whopping five goals and a shutout win, the Rangers truly delivered Blueshirt fans with a game to remember. After the 5-0 win over the Ottawa Senators and extending the point streak to nine games, the Blueshirts are now only two points away from a playoff place.
Let's breakdown exactly how the Rangers got their latest win with five key takeaways from the matchup.
1. The Rempire Strikes Back, again
Quickly becoming a fan-favorite, 22-year-old forward and enforcer Matt Rempe had a heck of a game against the Senators. No. 73 tallied his second regular-season goal of his career in addition to four shots and two hits off of 9:12 TOI.
"I've been working a lot on my plays with the puck," Rempe said. "And I think the more comfortable I get, the more I can continue to make plays ... I just want to continue to work on my game and I think that's coming along nicely."
2. Offside Mistakes
Despite handing the Senators (24-19-4) a regulation loss for the first time in seven games, there were mistakes made by the Blueshirts in the contest.
Alexis Lafreniere gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead with 1:12 remaining in the first period, scoring with a backhanded shot off a rebound of Fox's shot from the right point. However, the goal came 77 seconds after the Rangers had a would-be goal from Sam Carrick taken off the board because of Ottawa's first of two successful coach's challenges for offside.
Newly -acquired Arthur Kaliyev appeared to score again with 14:29 remaining in the second, but again the Senators challenged for offside and it was ruled in their favor.
Rempe was ruled offsides during the first challenge, the same as veteran Chris Kreider.
3. The Scrum
In the third period, Senators captain Brady Tkacuk went into the crease, aggresively hitting Igor Shesterkin's hand and all hell broke loose for both teams.
“[I was] a little nervous cause I don’t want anything to happen to him, but I love it," Rempe said. "Just cause he’s a competitor. Just want to make sure I get in there and nothing happens. It was awesome, Igor’s the man.”
4. Shesterkin Shines
In addition to punching Tkachuk and going to bat for his team in the team scrum — Shesty played one hell of a hockey game in the net.
Following play against Ottawa, Shesterkin extended his shutout streak to 164:03, the second longest of his career behind the 166:30 he had last season from March 4-14. He made 20 saves for his second straight shutout and was rightfully named one of the stars of the game.
5. Adam Fox and Alexis Lafreniere deliver
The second star of the game was left wing Lafreniere. Famously called "Laffy" by fans, he recorded one goal and one assist en route to the win. Teammate Adam Fox also recorded two points. He had two assists and registered his 61st career multi-assist game.
This is noteworthy for Fox, as he hit No. 60 in the Rangers' most recent game against Montreal.
