Adam Fox and the Rangers refuse to pack it in down the stretch

The locker room might be looking toward the summer, but the competitive fire hasn't faded. Adam Fox explains why matching the intensity of playoff-desperate teams like Detroit and Washington is a vital step for the Rangers' Letter 2.0 momentum.

A few weeks ago, Adam Fox was talking like a man who was undecided about his future. However, the recent play of the New York Rangers has him singing a tune that should make fans feel a little bit better. The 2025-26 season has been one of trial and tribulation for Fox, and Sunday’s victory was a reminder of both his importance to the organization and how vital "meaningless" games can be for a team's morale.

Fox and the Rangers won't give up and quit

When asked about what it means for the Rangers to beat two teams fighting for their playoff lives on consecutive days, the Blueshirts’ alternate captain set the record straight on the team’s mindset.

Via Colin Stephenson of Newsday:

"Obviously (beating) teams that have that sense of desperation and something to play for, I think... shows that we haven't really gave up on the year and packed it in. Like we said, we're still trying to build on something and gain momentum and establish something here that we could take positively into the summer and build on that."

The takeaway here is Fox connecting the dots of the Letter 2.0 retool building on something now, establishing an identity rooted in positivity, and carrying that momentum into the offseason. There is a stark difference between Fox’s April comments and his words from February 26, when he told reporters, "I'm just trying to focus on this year right now. That's a conversation when we're done playing games." The shift in tone suggests that the internal roster audit is yielding some results the players can actually get behind.

The Rangers went 8-6-2 with 18 points in the month of March, and are 2-1-0 with four points this month. The Rangers tallied just 25 points from December through February, and their recent play represents a significant improvement at a time in which fans are crossing their fingers for more losses to improve the team's chance once the lottery balls are drawn in May. The Rangers are a team of professionals with many young players and veterans playing for their NHL future, so it was never realistic to expect the team to rollover and give up the rest of the season.

Fox maintaining an elite pace

If Fox decides his future remains on Broadway, it would be a massive win for the Rangers. He continues to remind the league that he is an elite defenseman, and Sunday’s win was his 51st game of the season, and he now sits at 50 points (eight goals, 42 assists). He is back to playing at a near point-per-game pace, with four goals and 18 assists over his last 19 games.

His underlying metrics remain equally elite. According to Evolving-Hockey, Fox currently holds a 57.14 GF%, a 55.3 CF%, and a 58.08 xGF% in 939 minutes at 5v5. There aren't many defenders in the NHL as well-rounded as Fox, and it is no surprise that the Rangers have looked more competent since his return to the lineup.

The home stretch

The Rangers will play their final home game of the season on Wednesday against the Buffalo Sabres before ending the year on a three-game road trip against Dallas, Florida, and Tampa Bay.

While these wins are building the culture Fox spoke about, the team is entering treacherous territory regarding draft odds. If the Rangers continue to play spoiler against playoff contenders, securing a top-end pick will require some significant lottery luck. For now, however, the focus in the locker room is clearly on finishing strong and proving that the foundation for next season is already being laid.
