When you consider how many legendary players have passed through Broadway over the last century of New York Rangers hockey, it is a remarkably distinguished list. Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Jaromír Jágr, Mike Richter, Henrik Lundqvist, and Igor Shesterkin headline the forward and goaltending royalty. But when reflecting on the blue line, one name stands above all others as the gold standard of franchise greatness: No. 2, Brian Leetch.
In this current era, another Blueshirt defenseman is building a compelling case to be mentioned right alongside Leetch in franchise lore. That player is Adam Fox.
21 points in 17 games
In Thursday night’s 3-2 comeback victory over Philadelphia, Fox accomplished a feat that hasn't been matched by a Rangers defenseman since Leetch. By collecting two assists, Fox reached the 20-point plateau in just 17 games, becoming the second-fastest blue-liner in franchise history to hit that mark behind only Leetch, who did it in 15 games during the 2000-01 campaign.
Adam Fox is the fastest Rangers defenseman (17 GP) to record 20 points in a season since Brian Leetch (15 GP in 2000-01).

Fox wasn't done there. His second primary helper pushed him to 21 points through 17 games, putting him on an eye-popping full season pace for 104 points. That projection completely shatters his previous career-high of 74 points established in 2021-22.
This is the exact level of dominance Rangers fans hoped to see from Fox at this stage of his career. These are his peak prime years, and elite point production should be the standard expected from him over the next three or four seasons.
Can He Surpass Leetch One Day?
Fox still has substantial ground to cover to rival Leetch, both statistically and in overall legacy. Leetch holds a massive edge in career scoring, leading that head-to-head battle 1,028 points (981 as a Ranger) to Fox’s 443. That leaves a 585-point gap to Leetch's total career output. Based on Fox’s current career 82-game scoring averages, catching that mark would require roughly eight more highly productive seasons.
If he maintains health, reaching that total is entirely within the realm of possibility, and the hope is that Fox spends every one of those seasons wearing No. 23 with "Rangers" stitched across his chest.
The bigger hurdle, however, transcends regular-season totals, Norris Trophies, or individual point plateaus. Leetch achieved the ultimate prize: leading Mark Messier and company to the 1994 Stanley Cup. No. 2 captured the Conn Smythe Trophy with an astonishing 11 goals and 23 assists for 34 points in 23 playoff games.
Fox still has mountain-sized shoes to fill to fully match Leetch, but this blistering 21-point start is an unmistakable reminder of his historic trajectory. Barring the unforeseen, No. 23 is destined to hang from the rafters of Madison Square Garden one day.
