The New York Rangers are slated to travel to Ohio to face the Columbus Blue Jackets on the second night of a back-to-back. After dropping Friday's game at home to the Pittsburgh Penguins, tonight's game is of the utmost importance. The Rangers trail the Blue Jackets by four points in the standings with one game in hand. How can they pick up a road victory?

Score Early and Often

The Rangers, who have scored a league-leading 21 first period goals since January 2nd, can demoralize the Blue Jackets early on with a fast start to the game. While this might seem obvious, Columbus' three-game losing streak amplifies the importance of winning the first period. Delivering an early blow could break them. With this being the final game before the NHL goes on a two-week break for the 4 Nations Face-Off, the Blue Jackets could start thinking about regrouping during their hiatus if they fall behind early. Columbus and New York both struggle to win from behind. The Blue Jackets have ten comeback victories, while the Rangers have 11.

Don't Lose the Defenseman

The Blue Jackets have found prolific production from their defense corps this season. With a league-leading 36 goals and second place 136 points, the Rangers forwards must make sure they do not get caught puck-watching. Michigan native Zach Werenski has recorded 17 goals and 58 points in 54 games this season, and is a legitimate Norris Trophy candidate. If Werenski and his fellow blueliners are given time and space in the offensive zone, it could be a long night for the Rangers.

Get the Puck to the Net

It's boring, but it's true. While Columbus has a strong offensive game, their defense leaves much to be desired. Giving up 3.29 goals-per-game (good for 25th in the NHL), they have proven to be vulnerable in their own zone. If the Rangers put the puck in dangerous positions around the net, they should be able to find success against Blue Jackets' goaltender Elvis Merzlikins, who only saves 89.5% of the shots he faces. The Jackets also struggle to kill penalties. Their 75.3 penalty kill percentage ranks 26th in the league. The Rangers can capitalize on this deficency with their abundance of offensive talent. They lead the NHL in goals scored since January 2nd, with 59 tallies.

With every loss, the next game becomes that much more important for the Rangers. With about nine teams fighting for three playoff spots in the east, most of the games going forward will present an opportunity for New York to gain ground in the race. They must start tonight.
