So much for that idea.

The New York Rangers are in a difficult position this offseason, as there is no easy fix for them to catapult back into Stanley Cup contenders. With the free agent market all dried up, fans hoped that there was a chance a superstar would force their way onto the trade block. One of the common names pushed was Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk.

Tkachuk has been the subject of trade speculation throughout this season, from when the Senators were out of playoff position, to his father Keith's comments about Brady's playing time and supposed directed criticism towards goaltender Linus Ullmark. Now, the speculation is back on after Tkachuk and the Senators were swept out of the first round by the Carolina Hurricanes, where the captain was held without a point through those four games.

Even though Senators general manager Steve Staios shut down any talk of trading Tkachuk, it was really all dependent on what the star wanted to do. Well, Tkachuk gave an emphatic answer on Wednesday.

Brady Tkachuk announces commitment to Senators, putting an end to trade talk

While speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Tkachuk announced his commitment to the Senators and admitted that the trade speculation is getting to him.

"I feel like I've answered this hundreds of times. I feel like I've never shown, I've never said none of those things ever came out of my mouth, and quite honestly it's just getting frustrating. It's becoming a distraction because I have been fully committed to this team, to the city, and it's just becoming a distraction," said Tkachuk.

That sounds like a player who is committed to playing for his current team. Because of that, we can pretty much put an end to the dream that the Rangers could somehow trade for Tkachuk this offseason.

It's no secret that the Rangers have had their eyes on landing Tkachuk for the past couple of years. Back in 2024, a report of the team's interest set off Senators owner Michael Andlauer, accusing the Rangers of "soft tampering." Rangers general manager Chris Drury also knows Tkachuk well, considering he was the assistant GM for Team USA, who won a gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics. With how the season ended for the Senators, there was some hope that Tkachuk could reach the market.

Now, that isn't happening. Based on Tkachuk's comments, the Rangers' best shot at landing him are in the summer of 2028. As of now, the Rangers' best chance to land a potential superstar this offseason is if they are able to land Gavin McKenna or Ivar Stenberg in the NHL Draft.
