Following a disapointing 6-5 overtime loss vs. the San Jose Sharks, the New York Rangers are shaking things up before embarking on a four-game road trip to Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest.
Brennan Othmann has been recalled from American Hockey League
UPDATE: Brennan Othmann has been recalled from the Hartford Wolf Pack.

Othmann failed to make the New York Rangers out of training camp, and his assignment to Hartford felt like he squandered his final chance to make an impact with the Blueshirts. He has now been given an extra life, and it will be interesting to see where he will be deployed in the lineup. Othmann has just one assist for the Wolf Pack, and now sits with a career AHL line of 33 goals, 37 assists, and 70 points in 98 games.
The hope is that Othmann can draw on last season's underlying success
Per Evolving-Hockey, Othmann posted a 70.06 goals for percentage, a 53.51 Corsi for percentage, and a 51.69 expected goals for percentage this past season. The Rangers as a team scored 3.41 goals for per 60 minutes, and conceded just 1.46 against.
Othmann generated these statistics playing just 214 minutes at 5v5, and in 22 total games he had just a pair of assists while averaging 9:58 per game. The Rangers as a team have more structure under Mike Sullivan, and the hope is that this environment will enhance Othmann's game and enable him to have the desired impact.
At this point Othmann needs to play like his Rangers future depends on it. He's been given another opportunity, one he probably didn't expect, and there's no excuse not to be involved. The Rangers saw what Othmann was capable of while he was in the OHL, and also saw him be a productive goal scorer in Hartford. The team is in dire need of some secondary scoring and energy, and time will tell if he can finally break through in what is expected to be his final chance.
