We're still discussing draft prospects, and Moncton Wildcats center Caleb Desnoyers is the latest to join the conversation. Desnoyers is another interesting debate as he doesn't have the highest talent level now compared to those projected to go around him. Still, he already possesses an intimidating stature, which will make him sought after by a few teams that want to add a giant to their pipeline and hope that he becomes suitable for their organization.
In 56 games this year in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, Desnoyers tallied 35 goals and 49 assists for 84 points. He's got talent, but that isn't the extreme production we see from players expected to go first and second overall. If you believe in some scouts, this kid should still be taken anywhere from as low as 14th to as high as 3rd overall. The consensus is a touch lower, around the 6-8 range, but it will be a strong talent.
At 6'2, this left-handed center from St Hyacinthe, Quebec, has been one of the better talents to come out of the QMJHL this season. While he could go anywhere in the ranger I mentioned, he would be a first-rounder. That's a strong indication of how good he is and how he could be if he develops correctly. He's not as close to a finished article as someone like Michael Misa, but there is still much talent here.
The New York Rangers track record at developing forwards is awful. Vitali Kravtsov and Kaapo Kakko spring to mind. While Filip Chytil and Alexis Lafreniere balance it out, Lafreniere was a first-overall pick, and Chytil took a while to come into his own. That could be something to monitor if the Rangers end up with Caleb Desnoyers coming out of the 2025 NHL entry draft.
