The 2025 NHL draft class has a lot of size that is projected to be selected early. With guys bigger than refrigerators expected to be among the first ten players selected, there needs to be some conversation about one of the smallest players in this class. Many general managers have a fear of smaller players getting crushed and injured beyond utilization, but we've seen it work in New York. Mats Zuccarello is 5'8, and he was an incredible Ranger.
From this class, the player that fits this description is 5'7 Cameron Schmidt. The Edmonton, Alberta native is not a towering presence on the ice, but his skill set might be among the best in the class. His production in juniors this season backs it up as well. He is one of the most dangerous members of this draft class if the Blueshirts opt to go down this path. It could be fruitful if they do.
With the Vancouver Giants, Schmidt recorded 40 goals and 38 assists for 78 points in 61 games. That is a respectable scoring pace for a player who doesn't possess the most immense stature. He can still clearly be a contributor for teams with his production, and with a good skating ability, there won't be much concern about his game transitioning to the NHL. It'll be whether or not his size stops him from making that leap.
Schmidt is still away from being NHL-ready, but he's an intriguing prospect. He's got requirements to work on his defensive game, he needs to understand how to play within his stature a little better, and Schmidt needs to spend a few more hours in the gym adding some muscle mass before he is capable of transitioning into professional hockey. However, this person doesn't need much to break his way to be an elite talent.
