The New York Rangers are proving to be an intense force against competitors. The Rangers are getting their groove with J.T. Miller integrating well and the momentum building with two recent wins. The Penguins will be playing Friday against the Blueshirts without one of their key players, and it would greatly benefit the Rangers if they can take advantage of that loss.

On Feb. 7th, at Madison Square Garden, the Metropolitan Division rival Pittsburgh takes on the New York Rangers. The Rangers are coming off a division win against the Boston Bruins and have a competitive edge to win the matchup to get even closer to a wildcard spot. Though, the Rangers are just ahead of the Penguins by only three points.

It's going to be a close round for these two teams.

The Penguins have 53 points, and their ranking for the wildcard spot territory is No. 8 whereas the Rangers are just a bit ahead with 56 points and a ranking two spots ahead at No. 6.

An advantage for the Rangers is that they are coming off a great win, while the Penguins just recently lost to the New Jersey Devils. Can the Rangers keep the momentum going and continue winning games? The Rangers have two wins in a row with their latest streak, but the question is — can they get to a three-game-winning streak? The pressure is on to see which team will secure a win and get one step closer in the race of the playoffs.

The Rangers have quite a few advantages going into tonight’s game - fewer injuries, a winning streak, and the home-team advantage.

JT Miller is integrating well, and Sidney Crosby is injured.

Sidney Crosby, one of the Penguin’s beloved players and team captain, was out with an upper-body evaluation just two days ago. The Penguins have announced that Crosby will not be playing in tonight’s game. In the pregame video for the Penguins, Mike Sullivan even called Crosby “the heartbeat of the team.” This could give the Rangers a much-needed advantage, with the Penguins not at 100%.

Crosby’s absence coupled with the fact that Miller is integrating well with two goals in the last three games, should push the Rangers to the win. Even the Penguins recognize that Miller could be a threat, as Sullivan calls out Miller as a great player.

Team Matchup and Winning Streaks

In this 2024-2025 season, the Penguins haven’t beaten the Rangers. The Penguin’s opener hosted the Rangers, ending with a 6-0 complete shutout by the Rangers. The Rangers continued their dominating smash against the Penguins in another game, beating them by two points. That’s a total of two games this season, with the Penguins not getting any wins against the Rangers. Will this change tonight for the Penguins, or will the Rangers be able to secure their third win?  Of course, the game is at MSG, so the Blueshirt fans will add their electrifying energy, and the home team advantage always adds value.

Every game counts for the Rangers in this extremely crucial race to the battle of the playoffs.
