The NHL Draft Lottery didn't unfold the way the New York Rangers had hoped. Missing out on the opportunity to select one of the blue-chip talents at the very top of the draft was disappointing for an organization desperately in need of a star. However, picking fifth is not a bad consolation prize.
For a Rangers team that needs to replenish its prospect pool - Prince George Cougars defenseman Carson Carels immediately jumpstarts that process. While a dynamic offensive weapon like Gavin McKenna, Ivar Stenbery or Caleb Malhotra would have generated excitement throughout the fan base, Carels has the potential to become a cornerstone defenseman for years to come.
A complete modern defenseman
Carels spent the 2025-26 season with the WHL's Prince George Cougars, where he elevated his draft stock with a breakout offensive campaign. The 17 year old finished the year with 73 points (20 goals, 53 assists), showcasing an offensive toolkit that complements his hardnose defensive game.
What separates Carels from many offensive defensemen in this draft class is his ability to impact the game without sacrificing defensive responsibility. His gap control is sound, he consistently kills plays before they develop, and he uses his skating well in all three zones.

His shot is another major weapon. Whether walking the blue line on the power play or jumping into the rush, Carels possesses a heavy release that already projects as NHL caliber.
Built for the NHL
One of the first things that stands out about Carels is his physical maturity.
Although he will need development time before making the jump to professional hockey, he already possesses an NHL-ready frame. He plays with strength, finishes checks, and doesn't shy away from physicality - he welcomes it.
""He's built like a tank—he's a farm kid who raises hundreds of cattle. Carels' defensive awareness, two-way skill, strong physique and high-end hockey sense make him truly high-end."Steven Ellis

The combination of size, strength and mobility are a great makeup for a modern top-pairing defenseman.
North Dakota will be the next step
Following his WHL career, Carels is set to begin his NCAA journey at the University of North Dakota, one of college hockey's premier development programs.
He will join Rangers prospect EJ Emery, Chris Drury's first-round selection from 2024, while also potentially sharing the spotlight with fellow top defensive prospect Keaton Verhoeff.
The move to North Dakota should provide an ideal environment for Carels to refine the remaining areas of his game. While his overall profile is extremely polished for a player his age, there are moments when he can force plays under pressure or make overly aggressive reads that lead to unnecessary turnovers.
Those mistakes are common among young defensemen carrying significant responsibility, and they are the type of habits that strong collegiate programs can help round out.
If Carels continues on his current developmental path, those concerns should become far less frequent over the next two seasons.
Why Carels fits what the Rangers need
Beyond the talent itself, Carels feels like the type of player Chris Drury gravitates toward.
He plays with an edge, competes hard in difficult areas of the ice, and embraces physical play. At the same time, he offers legitimate offensive upside and can impact the game in every situation.
His projection is enticing. At his ceiling, Carels has all the tools to develop into a true first-pairing defenseman capable of playing in every situation. Even if he falls short of that upside, his floor should be relatively safe as a second-pair defender who can contribute offensively while bringing a physical presence to the Rangers' blue line.

The Rangers may not have landed the lottery result they wanted, but they are still positioned to add a potential cornerstone piece to their future.
As draft day approaches, plenty of names will be linked to New York's selection. However, when the Rangers step to the podium with the fifth overall pick, don't be surprised if Carson Carels is the player they ultimately call.
