In a move that signals a pivot toward future potential over veteran stability, the New York Rangers have acquired forward Aidan Thompson from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for defenseman Derrick Pouliot.
With the trade deadline clock rapidly winding down, President and General Manager Chris Drury is betting that Thompson's collegiate pedigree, specifically his high-octane offensive production at the University of Denver, can translate to the professional level. While Pouliot offered a known, veteran commodity for the Hartford Wolf Pack, the acquisition of Thompson is a distinct gamble on upside, aimed at injecting raw skill into the organization's prospect pipeline.
Who is Aidan Thompson?
Aidan Thompson, the 90th overall pick from the 2022 draft, is a classic swing for the fences acquisition. Standing 5'11" and 181 pounds, he was an absolute force at the University of Denver, where he racked up 117 points in 120 games. His senior season was the stuff of highlight reels including a blistering 21-goal, 54-point campaign that put him on the map. The year prior he won a National Championship and finished with 30 points in 44 games.
He also is a former teammate of Noah Laba, and maybe that is something that played a factor in making this trade.
#NYR confirm that they have picked up Aidan Thompson from the #Blackhawks for Derrick Pouliot.

I met Thompson at the Frozen Four last year, a National Champion in 2024 with Denver.
Played for the @LincolnStars in the @USHL.
Great kid.https://t.co/vtrVFvLhys
However, the professional game has proven to be a steeper climb. Now 24 and in the midst of his first full AHL season with the Rockford IceHogs, Thompson has experienced the typical growing pains of a collegiate transition. Through 40 games, he has posted six goals and nine assists for 15 points. While he hasn't yet replicated that dominant Denver magic, the Rangers are betting that the lack of production is a temporary hurdle.
Aidan Thompson plays with a ton of pace. Likes to shoot. Had a great end to his college career, has had a bit of a learning curve since turning pro.

Reliable, positionally sound 24YO. We'll see how much more development room he has, because some saw middle-six potential there.
By bringing him to New York, Drury is giving Thompson the clean slate he needs to rediscover his offensive game and prove he can play at a professional pace. He will certainly spend some time with the Hartford Wolf Pack to start, but I'd imagine he gets small bit of run on Broadway with the varsity squad before the season is over.
