Could Brett Berard crack the New York Rangers' top-6 in the future?

Head Coach Peter Laviolette made an interesting decision before the start of Tuesday night’s 2-1 loss to the Winnipeg Jets. Forward Brett Berard was scratched

In 23 games this season, many believe that he has earned his keep as a nightly addition to the New York Rangers roster. But, this is not the first time the rookie has sat out.

Looking toward his future with this organization, can the former 5th-round pick be able to crack the top six at some point? Does he have what it takes?

Stiff competition in top-6

Let’s put it this way, Berard absolutely cannot make it into the top six as it stands right now. Artemi Panarin, Vincent Trocheck, Mika Zibanejad, Alexis Lafreniere, Will Cuylle, and J.T. Miller cannot be moved down in the line sheet. But, if things go awry for one of those mentioned above, Berard could be a good replacement.

In 23 games this season, Berard has four goals and four assists for eight points. His most productive linemates were two top-six forwards, Zibanejad and Cuylle. The trio spent 27:09 on the ice together this season and they had some solid moments.

The Rangers can only benefit from starting Berard. More playing time will showcase whether or not he is what he is expected to be.

Has what it takes?

Even if he can get past a very good top-six unit and fit in, does he have what it takes to stay there? Berard has a long way to go to get there, but it is a good start.

The rookie has the makings of an everyday NHL talent, and with time, there is a high ceiling for him. Possibilities are endless for Berard if the Rangers can use him the right way. Over the past few years, we have seen both Filip Chytil and Kaapo Kakko leave New York and excel elsewhere. They were both touted as homegrown talent that will lead the future. Hopefully, Berard is not the next name on that list.

Obviously, the healthy scratches have to stop, if the Rangers want to see what Berard can do. The end of this season will be a glimpse into the future. Can he sneak his way onto the top-six and make an impact?
