Unrestricted NHL free agents are legally allowed to sign contracts tomorrow, and teams can start tendering offer sheets in an attempt to pluck restricted free agents from their current organization. The NHL free agent frenzy is in full swing with some players having signed extensions with their teams, some players have been traded, and others are inquiring about a player's availability. That is true for a team like the New York Rangers, as RFA K'Andre Miller is drawing interest from the Detroit Red Wings.

This news comes from Emily Kaplan of ESPN, and she reports that Steve Yzerman may be looking to use the cap space he freed up in the Vladimir Tarasenko trade on a defenseman.

Miller is coming off a season in which he posted a line of 7-20-27 in 74 games while skating 21:57 per night. It was a third consecutive down year offensively, and he's now gone from posting 43 points in 79 games to 30 points in 80 games to this year's output which equates to 0.36 points per game.

Miller is an RFA who is two years away from becoming a UFA, and carries a qualifying offer of $4,646,000. The Red Wings currently have $23,161,628 in cap space, per PuckPedia, and six defensemen under contract.

It remains to be seen if there will be a perfect match in a potential trade, but the Rangers have done business with Detroit before. Miller would be a solid fit from an age standpoint, as some current defenders for the Wings include Ben Chiarot (34), Justin Holl (33), Erik Gustaffson (33), and Jeff Petry (37) who is set to hit free agency on Tuesday if he isn't re-signed.

The Rangers currently have a roster of 20 players and $13,138,809 in cap space. They are expected to make a play for Vladislav Gavrikov of the Los Angeles Kings, and also still need to sign Will Cuylle to an extension. Moving Miller would help the Rangers in both of these pursuits.
