Carson Soucy’s impact on the New York Rangers wasn’t memorable. With very few goals and points added to his name, he made next to no impression as a good trade that the Rangers made. The passion was there to be in New York, but fans didn’t see that on the ice. Soucy needs to be better to get on the fans’ good side.
Expectations
Soucy is a newcomer to the Rangers. Fans only saw him as a Blueshirt for a couple of weeks before the Rangers ended their season. Soucy is a 30 year old defensemen. Many hockey fans know his name from his previous team, the Vancouver Canucks. New York had fresh blood on the team, but did he perform to make the trade worth it? He joined the Rangers on March 6, 2025. The Blueshirts got eliminated before making the playoffs, and Soucy didn’t get to play much after being acquired. He only played 16 games total with the Rangers. And to add to his performance, Soucy didn’t significantly impact his old team, the Canucks. There were no impressive plays on the ice in Vancouver, which didn't make him stand out. His impact of the Canucks gave no special energy; he played 59 games and only got three goals and seven assists out of all those. Soucy had a vision to come to New York with the influence of playing with Will Borgen and J.T. Miller. His dedication to this went so hard that he waived his no-trade clause to come to New York.
"There was definitely multiple factors,” Soucy said of waiving his no-trade clause. “Obviously, a team that wants you, wants to trade for you, is a big part of that. Nice having (J.T.) Miller, (Will) Borgen here. We were pretty tight in Seattle. Obviously, just New York, playing for the Rangers, playing in Madison Square Garden."Carson Soucy
"We think there's a lot of possibilities with Carson, whether it's with Schneids or Foxy or Will (Borgen), or even having him on the right side at some point. We'll see how it plays out. I'm glad we were able to get him. I was excited about the term, excited about the number. He's not a rental. …“He’s someone we could have in for the rest of the year and next year. I just like the overall game – the size, the skating, the sense, how he defends. We were able to do some homework on him the last couple weeks and we’re excited to get him with a piece we got in the Reilly Smith trade."Chris Drury
Performance
Big expectations surrounded Soucy’s acquisition, but he did not achieve his full potential. With the connection to his teammates, you would think more teamwork would be involved, but he played short. With his debut as a Ranger to the end of the season, he is walking out with only one goal and two assists. One goal for his impact on the Rangers isn’t impressive or needed. The trade that got him to New York didn’t seem to elevate how the Blueshirts played, but let them remain stagnant on the road to elimination. I remember talking to fans at Madison Square Garden and asking them what the Rangers needed. Many fans had a lot of negative things to say about Soucy. To change the fans' perspective, Soucy needs to bring it to the ice next season if he doesn’t get traded.
The results of having a D grade means there is much room for improvement. Perhaps he played short because he was added to the roster late in the season. He never found his groove. The team was already in the ditches, so it is possible that the lack of winning energy in turn affected the way he played. Good energy to play, bad energy to lose. The Rangers couldn’t keep their energy up. In the beginning, fans were excited for a new name to come onto the team, but they quickly changed their mind when they saw how he played.
Where They Go From Here
Soucy is under contract for the next season with the Rangers, but there is talk that he should be traded. The Rangers had a bad year, I think perhaps they do want to start their roster next season with the strongest players they have. Therefore, I understand the talk to trade him with his stats this season not being excellent. There is always potential for him to rise and play better. Now we wait to see if he remains or goes. It’s all up to the Rangers now.
