One of the biggest questions the New York Rangers have to answer this offseason is what they are going to do with Vincent Trocheck. At this past trade deadline, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that Trocheck was going to be moved. But the deadline came and went with Trocheck still with the Rangers. But with the offseason about to begin, the question of Trocheck's availability has resurfaced. Several teams are reported to be interested in acquiring him.
One team that appears to be interested in acquiring Trocheck is the Boston Bruins. Jesse Courville-Lynch of The Hockey Writers recently wrote about how the Bruins are a good landing spot for the veteran forward. It would give them a needed center and another offensive threat in their top six. He could be the piece that turns the Bruins back into a cup contender. But are the Bruins the right trading partner for the Rangers?
What could the Bruins send the Rangers for Vincent Trocheck?
At first glance, the Bruins are a destination that would be appealing for Trocheck. With him having a no movement clause, he needs to approve the trade. Trocheck is reportedly looking for a team on the East Coast. While not stated, he likely also wants to go to a team that is in contention. These are two boxes the Bruins check. The Bruins are coming off a 45-27-10 season that saw them clinch the first wildcard spot in the East.
Now that we know the Bruins are a destination Trocheck would approve, the question is: do the Bruins have the pieces to get him? Without question, Trocheck is the most valuable asset the Rangers have. Sure, they will likely not get the massive package they were trying to get at the deadline. But they still can land a significant package for him. At the very least, the Rangers can get a young NHL-ready player and a first for him.
The Bruins have a couple of prospects that should pique the Rangers' interest. The first one is Dean Letourneau. The center is coming off a breakout season at Boston College, where he racked up 22 goals and 17 assists for 39 points. Letourneau has a hulking 6' 7" 220-pound frame, which he is not afraid to use. He is a typical power forward with a good shot and provides some physicality. But Letourneau will not be NHL-ready until the 2027-28 season, which is not something the Rangers want.
The player who fits the Rangers timeline more is Matthew Poitras. Unlike Letourneau, Poitras has already made his NHL debut. In fact, he has appeared in 69 games, logging seven goals and 20 assists for 27 points.
He has shown flashes in the NHL and is coming off his best season in terms of point production with the Providence Bruins. Poitras is someone who could be in the Rangers' opening-night lineup. Plus a change of scenery may be just what he needs to put it all together.
Regardless of what combination of prospects and draft picks the Rangers get, the Bruins are a good partner. They will be able to secure a very good return and send Trocheck to a destination he approves.
