The trade for Pavel Dorofeyev and the selection of Alberts Šmits have finally provided some clarity on the direction Chris Drury is steering the New York Rangers. This weekend was highlighted by a deal for the Vegas Golden Knights’ leading scorer and the addition of a big, mobile Latvian defenseman in the draft.
These moves suggest Drury intends to accelerate the retool and springboard the Rangers back into contention sooner rather than later. And while fans are running their victory laps - particularly the Dorofeyev acquisition - there are reasons to worry.
Throughout the week, the Rangers were reportedly circling several big names, including Bowen Byram and Mason McTavish. Ultimately, Drury was effectively priced out and saved from himself as Chicago and St. Louis paid premiums to land their respective targets.
A weekend that finally clarified the direction
No one saw the Dorofeyev deal coming. Minutes before the Rangers were on the clock with the fifth overall pick, news broke that they acquired the Vegas winger. On paper, the move looks exciting as the Rangers desperately need some offensive firepower, but there’s reason to pump the breaks.

The 25-year-old (turning 26 in October) led the Golden Knights in goals over the past two seasons and possesses a lethal shot. He’s also responsible defensively, which adds to his appeal. However, the Rangers are now paying him to serve as, at minimum, a top-two or top-three forward - an expectation that may not be realistic.

The Dorofeyev gamble is bigger than people realize
Dorofeyev is not a dynamic, play-driving winger. He is a sniper. And while that’s a great skillset, the context matters. This past season, 20 of his 37 goals came on the power play - a unit stacked with elite talent featuring Jack Eichel, Mitch Marner, and Mark Stone. These are premier players in the NHL.
Is that production sustainable in New York, where the talent around him is far less stable, and still a lack of reinforcements on its way. At five-on-five, Dorofeyev’s numbers are far more modest. Drury has made a big investment in a player who has benefited heavily from elite linemates and elite puck movement. Without that environment, there’s risk attached to expecting a similar result.
Šmits reinforces an expedited approach
Then there’s Alberts Šmits.
Drury had an extended look at the Latvian defenseman during international play in Milan and has been linked to the Rangers for months. So while Šmits’ name being called at No. 5 wasn’t necessarily a surprise, the fact that Chase Reid was still available certainly was.

Reid was widely regarded as the top defenseman in this year’s class. He has elite skating ability and high-end offensive instincts. At his ceiling, he can be a true game-changing blueliner at the NHL level.
Still, Drury opted to go the Šmits route, showcasing the organization’s desire to return to competitiveness sooner rather than later. Šmits is viewed as the most NHL-ready defenseman in the class, even if his long-term ceiling may not be the same as players like Reid or Carson Carels.

Chase Reid still on the board: A missed opportunity?
There is an outside chance Šmits pushes for a roster spot out of training camp, though that seems unlikely. More realistically, he can be lacing them up on Broadway as early as the 2027–28 season.
Passing on a higher-ceiling defender like Reid will be debated, especially if Šmits tops out as a steady, but no game-changing NHL presence.
The demand for answers has only grown louder, and it appears Chris Drury has responded. These decisions come with upside, but also come with extreme risk. If things don’t break the right way, Drury will likely be out of chances.
