The more goaltenders secured on a NHL team's roster, the better.
On Sunday, New York Rangers President and General Manager Chris Drury announced that the Rangers had agreed to terms with goaltender Dylan Garand on a one-year contract extension. The netminder's history with the Blueshirts goes back to 2020; he was the No. 103 overall pick of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. His extension is important to the franchise, as he regularly contributes to the American Hockey League affiliate of the Hartford Wolf Pack and could serve as a solid backup when either Igor Shesterkin or Jonathan Quick are unavailable.
At 23-years-old, Garand tallied a 20-10-8 record in 39 games for the Wolf Pack during the 2024-25 season. He earned a career-high season which included a 2.73 goals-against average, three shutouts and featured a .913 save percentage — tied for the ninth highest among all qualified goalies in the AHL.
Garand's new deal
Per the New York Post, Garand's deal is a two-way deal worth the league minimum of $775,000 at the NHL level and $100,000 at the AHL level, with $125,000 guaranteed,

Garand can be considered a top goalie prospect. He has taken warmups for the Rangers on multiple occasions, but has yet to make his league debut. That could change this season because he now appears to be the de facto third string goalie on the depth chart.
One of the subplots for next season. NYR did not bring in a new veteran goaltender to replace Louis Domingue. It appears that Dylan Garand will be the third-string goaltender and full-time AHL starter.

If he succeeds then he's likely the backup goaltender in 26-27. https://t.co/DIR5JhpTRf
Most recently, Garand also represented the Wolf Pack in the 2025 AHL All-Star Challenge after his career-high season.
When it comes to international play, the 6'1", 176-pound goaltender has represented Team Canada in several tournaments, including the 2025 IIHF World Championship and the World Junior Championships in 2021 and 2022. He also helped Canada win a gold medal at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship.
Most fans often say that Garand embodies the future of Rangers goaltending. Hopefully this new deal will prove these fans correct as the young netminder continues to develop under Shesterkin and Quick.
In addition to this news, the team later announced Talyn Boyko was also given a contract extension.
