Today is Day 2 of the 2026 NHL Draft, a marathon of an event that will start with Round 2 and end with Round 7 later on in the day. Here is everything you need to know about today's activities.

How Day 1 of the draft went for New York Rangers

The New York Rangers were huge winners of Day 1 by making a blockbuster trade for Pavel Dorofeyev and selecting Alberts Smits at No. 5 overall. Dorofeyev gives the Rangers a much needed goal-scoring boost, and Smits projects to be a perfect long-term partner for Adam Fox. The Blueshirts left Chase Reid on the board, he eventually was drafted by Seattle, but all in all it was a magnificent first day of the draft.

Remaining draft picks

Round 2 - No. 64 overall acquired from Carolina Hurricanes in K'Andre Miller trade

Round 3 - No. 67 overall, Rangers' own third round pick, No. 77 overall acquired from New York Islanders in Carson Soucy trade, No. 81 overall acquired from Los Angeles Kings in Artemi Panarin trade

Round 5 - No. 131 overall, Rangers' own fifth round pick

Round 6 - No. 162 overall, Chicago Blackhawks pick acquired from Buffalo Sabres, acquired by Rangers in Sam Carrick trade, and No. 163 overall, Rangers' own sixth round pick

Round 7 - No. 193 overall, Vancouver Canucks pick acquired in Vitali Kravtsov trade

Top Remaining trade assets to keep an eye on

Vincent Trocheck, $5.625 million for three seasons - the Rangers failed to trade Trocheck during Day 1 of the draft, and it remains interesting that he is still with the organization. The Blueshirts failed to trade him before this year's trade deadline, and they felt they could do better than the initial offers of a first round pick and a prospect. There's still a chance the Rangers land a first round pick for Trocheck, but it would be in a future draft which might ultimately end up being more valuable.

Braden Schneider, restricted free agent - Schneider turns 25 in September, and needs a new contract. The Rangers has bridged him once before, and at this point it would make a ton of sense for the organization to move on. A one-year deal just kicks the can down the road again, a two-year deal walks him to unrestricted free agency, and a long-term deal just doesn't make any sense.

Projected cap space

Puck Pedia currently projects the Rangers as having $14,700,477 of cap space as of this moment. This has the team with an active roster size of 22, and doesn't include RFA Braden Schneider, Vincent Iorio, or unrestricted free agents Jonny Brodzinski and Conor Sheary.
