The New York Rangers have 14 games left in the 2025-26 season, and looking at it from above, it looks like that will be all she wrote. There is a near-100% chance that this season will end on April 15, in Tampa Bay. For a franchise that entered the year with loftier ambitions, the reality is stark... the finish line is in sight, and it leads straight to the draft lottery podium.

Looking at the current standings, the Blueshirts sit at 28-32-8 for 64 points, a mark that leaves them dead-last in the Eastern Conference. While that position is painful for the faithful at MSG, it provides a silver lining in the form of a 9.5% chance to secure the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. Currently, only three teams have better odds to land a franchise-altering talent, making every remaining loss a tactical gain for the Letter 2.0 retool.

The final gauntlet

The remaining schedule is a mix of contenders looking to sharpen their blades and fellow basement dwellers looking to out-tank one another. Of the 14 games left, the Rangers face a two-game set against the Florida Panthers, with the rest of the slate made up of single matchups.

The strength of schedule remains high with Buffalo, Detroit, Montreal, Dallas, and Tampa Bay are all holding playoff spots as of today. Meanwhile, Columbus is sitting right on the cusp, with Ottawa and Washington breathing down their necks. These high-stakes, highly competitive games account for eight of the 14 remaining dates.

Time to let the kids run free

If the points don't matter, the minutes certainly do. The only logical move left for President and General Manager Chris Drury is to let the kids take the wheel. This is the time to see what Gabe Perreault can do with consistent minutes and power play time and to let Matthew Robertson sink or swim in a top-four role. That could extend to Dylan Garand getting a promotion from Hartford. If this retool is going to mean anything, the organization needs an honest evaluation of its internal pipeline before the shiny new toy arrives in June.

Speaking of that, surely they cannot get another one wrong, right?

The race for No. 1 overall

Gavin McKenna of Penn State and Ivar Stenberg of the Swedish Hockey League are both going to be stars in this league. This might be the closest one-two prospect race we have seen since Jack Hughes and Kaapo Kakko back in 2019. Hopefully, the Rangers don't get that one wrong again, although there wasn't much they could give the New Jersey Devils for a trade-up.

The Rangers' 2025-26 run was catastrophically bad, with similar black marks to that of the season prior. This retooling phase is going to get very interesting with the salary cap increase and free agency having such a large pool of top-end talent. The Rangers could turn this thing around fast, but it is going to have to be a perfectly laid out plan from President and General Manager Chris Drury.

Embrace the tank for the last 14 games, but let the kids run free. That is the only option left at this point.
