Everything you need to know about the sudden Rangers defensive overhaul

Chris Drury made a couple of splashes on Free Agency Day where he added Marcus Pettersson from Vancouver and Sean Durzi from Utah to help revamp New York's defensive unit.

Chris Drury was busy for the Rangers on July 1 making a flurry of moves in a span of a few hours. Beginning with acquiring goaltender Joonas Korpisalo from the Bruins and ending with shipping out Will Borgen after a year and some change with the team.

The two most notable moves however were smothered in-between; first trading with the Vancouver Canucks to acquire defenseman Marcus Pettersson then sending fan favorite Vincent Trocheck to the Utah Mammoth for a package consisting promising prospect Cole Beaudoin, a 2027 third-round pick, and another defender in Sean Durzi.

Pettersson and Durzi will both surely be slotted into the Rangers top four for next season plus possibly in the future considering both are under contract for 2026-27 and beyond. But how will each help the Rangers blueline as the team looked to reshape the unit this offseason?

Marcus Pettersson is a familiar name for Mike Sullivan

Pettersson currently should be seen as a defensive defensemen who has familiarity with Mike Sullivan where he spent seven seasons with the Penguins playing in 442 games, scoring 141 points with a career high 30 in 2023-24 and then traded to Vancouver where he signed a six-year, $33 million dollar contract. Pettersson suited up in all 82 games for the Canucks where he had an uninspiring 43.76 expected goals share (xGF%), but on a really bad Vancouver team he was the best in his expected goals against per sixty (xGA/60) and gave up the third least high danger chances against on a per sixty minute basis during 5v5 play.

Additionally Pettersson's isolated impact on even strength defense was the best among all Canuck skaters and amid his tenure with Mike Sullivan in Pittsburgh, he had the best isolated defensive impact per sixty minutes (EVD/60) among all Penguin players who suited up for team and had a minimum of 100 minutes of even strength ice time.

Lastly Pettersson ranked in the 93rd percentile among all defenders in his even strength defensive play including being in the 74th percentile in his exit success rate which will an immediate upgrade over Matthew Robertson and Urho Vaakanainen's lackluster ability to carry the puck out of the defensive zone.

Acquiring Pettersson for a 2030 protected first-round pick may seem a bit steep, but there is no denying that he is currently the Rangers' second best left handed defensemen with his impressive defensive impact and ability to help transition the puck out of the defensive zone; which has felt like a struggle for Rangers blueliners since they lost in six to the Panthers during the 2024 playoffs.

Sean Durzi fills an offensive need on blueline

Durzi is a very good offensive defenseman who is highly impactful his teams' offensive performance. On Utah last season Durzi generated 3.05 expected goals for (xGF)/60 which was second among all Mammoth defensemen which would have also ranked second among the Rangers if you were to rank him with New York's blueliners

What makes Sean Durzi an even better acquisition for the Rangers is his very impressive offensive microstats (courtesy of hockeystats.com) among all defensemen during 5v5 play; rating in the 89th percentile in zone entries being an overwhelming net positive for offense where he helps in rush offense along with in-zone offense ranking in the 75th and 69th percentile for each.

Furthermore despite his defensive-zone retrievals and overall chances against not being his strong suit, Durzi is very good at denying the initial zone entry. So for the Rangers Durzi immediately is their second best offensive defensemen on the team where it has felt like they had an issue with generating points from their back end since the departures of notable players like Erik Gustafsson, K'Andre Miller, Zac Jones, and even Jacob Trouba for a couple of seasons.

So when Adam Fox isn't on the ice the Rangers can comfortably rely on whatever defensive pair Durzi is on to help generate quality offense while also being a net positive while on the ice.

The blueline has been upgraded

On paper the Rangers have shaped up their blueline, more specifically their top four, in a favorable way. Pettersson and Durzi's skill set look to compliment each other very well with each already being very solid second pair defensemen. Moreover shipping Will Borgen to Boston for an impressive package is addition by subtraction. Borgen is a solid third pair option, but he is just not what the Rangers need right now and replacing him with Durzi will give New York a more modern blueline.

Finally on Pettersson, his inclusion not only bumps Matthew Robertson/Urho Vaakanainen down the depth chart, but it also allows the Rangers to take their time with fifth overall pick Alberts Smits and allow him to develop with new Hartford Wolf Pack head coach Jay Leach down in the AHL.

President and General Manager Chris Drury may not be done making moves at defense as well, Braden Schneider, Scott Morrow, and Vincent Iorio are all restricted free agents needing a new contract. Schneider is the biggest name of the bunch as he could possibly be in for a very frightening long-term deal which may seem him dealt out. But for now the two additions of Marcus Pettersson and Sean Durzi has without a doubt given the Rangers a strong top-four that could very well be their best unit in a while.
