When it comes to the playoffs, New York Rangers fans probably don't have much of an interest. Their team isn't in it in the first place, and they're seeing former members of the organization thrive elsewhere. That's not an enjoyable viewing experience, that's for sure. There's former general manager Jeff Gorton building a Montreal Canadiens team that made it to the Eastern Conference Final. Also, former Ranger Brett Howden is a goal machine with the Vegas Golden Knights in the playoffs, and just the playoffs.

Then, there's K'Andre Miller, who is with the Carolina Hurricanes after the Rangers traded him to them for 2026 first- and second-round picks, and defenseman Scott Morrow. Miller showed promise of being a long term option on defense, but there were many instances of frustrating defensive miscues. For Rangers fans that watched Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals between the Hurricanes and Canadiens, they watched Miller commit a brutal error resulting in a Montreal goal.

In the first period, with Carolina trailing 3-1, Miller tried to stop Alex Newhook, who was skating up ice. The problem is, Sean Walker was also trying to defend Newhook. That left Ivan Demidov wide open at center ice, allowing him to go on the breakaway and put the puck past Hurricanes goalie Frederik Andersen to extend the Canadiens' lead to 4-1.

K'Andre Miller commits costly error that contributes to Hurricanes Game 1 loss to Canadiens

That is about as bad of a play you could make as a defender. As NHL.com's Dan Rosen said, Miller overcommitted on the play to try and stop Newhook along the boards. Yet, Walker had him covered. As a result, you see Demidov score his third goal of the playoffs. Look a 3-1 deficit is a manageable one. 4-1? The difficulty level to produce a comeback spikes.

During his time with the Rangers, Miller's inconsistent play on defense was part of fan frustation towards him. Yet, when he was on the top of his game, he was a solid defenseman that could produce on offense. In his five year Rangers career, he had a 36 goals and 96 assists to his credit, while posting a +49 plus/minus rating.

But when it came time for Miller to hit restricted free agency, the Rangers were unwilling to commit to a long-term contract. The Hurricanes were more than willing to do so, signing him to an eight-year, $60 million extension.

In his first year with the Hurricanes, Miller recorded eight goals, 29 assists, and a +7 plus/minus rating. During Carolina's dominant run through the first two rounds of the playoffs, Miller played well, posting six assists and a +9 plus/minus rating. That's not necessarily a surprise, considering the Hurricanes outscored the Ottawa Senators and Philadelphia Flyers 24-10. Then, Game 1 happened.

For the Hurricanes, they've learned they can't make any mistakes against the Canadiens, as their high-powered offense that has seemingly awakened at full strength will make them pay. Miller learned that the hard way, as he left Demidov wide open to score Montreal's fourth goal of the first period.

Rangers fans have seen their share of Miller's miscues over the years. Hurricanes fans saw it happen at the worst possible time.
