Players to Watch
Artemi Panarin
Today is Panarin's 34th birthday, and the Blueshirts' forward is looking to get out of a mini rut. Panarin had a four-point game against the Montreal Canadiens on October 18th, he scored the lone goal on October 20th against the Minnesota Wild, and he went pointless against the San Jose Sharks, Calgary Flames, and the Vancouver Canucks. It is not encouraging to see a player of Panarin's caliber generate nothing of substance against three of the worst teams in the league, and tonight vs. the Oilers is an opportunity to get back on track. In 20 career games vs. the Oilers, Panarin has scored eight goals and tallied 14 assists for 22 points.
Igor Shesterkin
Earlier this month the Rangers were defeated 2-0 by the Oilers, and Shesterkin stopped 20 of the 21 shots he faced. He followed that up with 22 saves against the Toronto Maple Leafs, and 29 saves vs. the Minnesota Wild. His last two games against the San Jose Sharks and Calgary Flames are ones he'd like to forget, and after a game off he's got the perfect opportunity to bounce back and pickup his third victory of the season. Shesterkin enters the game with a 2.25 goals against average and a .916 save percentage.
Mika Zibanejad
Zibanejad has three goals over his last five games, and he added two assists in that span for five points. His season totals to date read 4-2-6, and he's started to get rewarded for his efforts over the past few games. Zibanejad has had a better start to the season than years prior, and he has the chance to end the month of October on a good note. He's leading the team with 39 shots in 11 games, and he's certainly been a much more aggressive player. He's also rocking a 55.09 xGF% and a 51.88 CF% per Evolving-Hockey, and the hope is this type of underlying success will lead to more actual offense in the coming weeks.
