In a season that has felt like a continuous barrage of bad news for the New York Rangers, the team just took another hit. The Rangers have officially placed captain J.T. Miller on injured reserve with an upper-body injury. To make matters worse, the team confirmed this is a new issue completely unrelated to the nagging ailments that have hampered him throughout this frustrating campaign. Just exactly what fans want to hear regarding a 32 year old with an $8 million cap hit, a no-movement clause, and four years remaining on his contract.
The Rangers are placing captain JT Miller on injured reserve with an upper body injury. Told it’s a new injury, not related to what he’s been dealing with earlier this season.

The timing of this is, in a word, convenient.
Miller recently drew ire for his post-game comments regarding the fans at Madison Square Garden. Whether you think his assessment of the crowd was fair or completely out of line, the timing of his departure from the lineup during a pivotal trade deadline week is certainly something.
What this means for the deadline
With the trade deadline just days away, this injury changes a few things for the Rangers. For starters, the Rangers will need some time to figure out whether or not Miller will return to the lineup a little further down the line. There's no good reason for him to suit up again given the numerous ailments afflicting him, but it is notable he was placed on regular IR as opposed to long-term injured reserve.
If Miller isn't coming back, at all, the Rangers will need to figure out who takes his spot in the lineup, whether it be someone from Hartford or an interesting name acquired before this Friday's deadline. It is of significance because he occupies a top-six role in the lineup, and with this season all but lost, it is better off to have a youngster show what they can do as opposed to elevating a player like Conor Sheary or Taylor Raddysh. There aren't many options, but the upcoming trade deadline could inspire the front office to go shopping.
The Rangers have three days left until the clock runs out on the trade deadline. They are coming off a stretch where they have finally shown some fight, but they have also shown an inability to close games out. Now, they have to navigate the rest of this week without their captain. It may be for the best given that it is better off for their eventually draft position, but this is a team that has no true interest in tanking. The 2025-26 season has been a slog, and this is just the latest twist in an already tumultuous campaign.
