Since the turn of the year, the New York Rangers have started to pull out of their tailspin, which took them out of playoff places. They're beginning to rejuvenate themselves, and the defensive unit is one of the core reasons for the change in fortune. New York's defensive play has gotten drastically better with the addition of Will Borgen, and he and his partner K'Andre Miller have been the best-performing defensive unit since the calendar ticked over.

Miller's still drawing a dislike from some corners of the Rangers fanbase for his period turnovers, which can be costly, but focusing on the negatives in a situation will close your eyes to the positives. Yes, K'Andre Miller is prone to a bad defensive turnover that costs a goal, but his offensive output has him as a net neutral in terms of goals that go in when he is on the ice. He's been on the ice for 18 goals for and against since the change of the year.

He's not destroying the world with his play, but there has been a rumor that K'Andre Miller is nothing more than a plug on the second pairing. That isn't the case because when he makes mistakes, he puts the puck in the net to make up for it. He's scoring enough to make up for his issues, and his underlying numbers show this.

According to Natural Stat Trick, K'Andre Miller's expected goals against per 60 (xGA/60) is 2.39. That's the lowest on the team since the turn of the year. His expected goals for per 60 (xGF/60) is 2.61. That's only bettered by Adam Fox. That indicates that Miller is performing well above where he should be, and the boneheaded mistakes cause the issues that shoot him in the foot. If he can clean that up, Miller is still one of the best defensemen the Rangers have.
