Expectations
When the New York Rangers needed a defenseman to step up when Ryan Lindgren went out in preseason, they did not need to look far Instead of looking toward external help, or folding to give an up-and-comer a chance at large minutes on the ice per game, they called on the next guy up and he performed well. That d-man was K'Andre Miller.
It was a down year for every player on the Rangers roster, and Miller was included in this. But, it must be said that he stepped up into a role that no one thought he would be able to handle. That is the difference between Miller and the rest of this squad.
Performance
There was a hard start to the 2024-25 season when Ryan Lindgren went down in preseason. That hole on the left side of the first defensive pairing was a glaring one, as Adam Fox and Lindgren have been tightly paired over the last couple of seasons. Miller was then called upon to step up and did his job.
It was once Lindgren came back, and the locker room was broken by the General Manager and the Media, that things went south. The trainwreck that was last season cannot be blamed on one fault, but of many faults. None of which really should draw back to Miller and his play throughout the season.
With seven goals and 20 assists for 27 points, it was an unproductive year for him in terms of offense. But he was able to play well alongside Fox, and when the Rangers made a trade for William Borgen from Seattle for Kaapo Kakko, the two played well together.
What's next for him?
Now, Miller is up for a new contract after his two-year, $3.872 million deal expired at the end of last season. This next contract could be a tricky one, as it will be difficult to gauge what his value is. Furthermore, if the Rangers decide to low-ball him to keep him for a discounted price following an all-around bad season, he could go elsewhere.
Miller has played well in his five years as a Blueshirt. 2024-25 was no different, but looking at it under the right circumstances. There is a lot more that he could have done, but he did show a lot of growth last season. Another bridge deal might be out of the question, as Miller will likely be looking for a more permanent home.
Decisions, decisions.
