November 1, 2025 was a date that was likely circled on the calendars of many fans of the New York Rangers, as it marked a road game vs. the Seattle Kraken. Not only would it mark a return to Seattle for Will Borgen and Carson Soucy, but it would be the first time Kaapo Kakko faced the Blueshirts since being traded last season. It was just revealed over the weekend that Kakko should miss that game.

Kakko to miss six weeks with broken hand

The Rangers' No. 2 pick from the 2019 draft had his hand slashed during a preseason game vs. the Edmonton Oilers, and the infraction resulted in a broken hand that will sideline him for six weeks. Assuming that he needs the entire six weeks to heal, that would put a potential return anytime after November 15th.

If Kakko were able to return from the injury and stay healthy, his next chance at playing his former club would come on January 12, 2026 at Madison Square Garden. The game being at home, and an official return for Kakko, may ultimately make things more special in the long run.

Kakko has played well since departing Big Apple

The Rangers' former top prospect skated in 49 games for Seattle following last season's trade, and he performed very well for his new club, Kakko scored 10 goals and assisted on 20 others to finish with 30 points, a stark improvement upon the 14 points he had in 30 games in New York. When all was said and done, Kakko had a career year with 44 points in 79 games, and a career high 30 assists.

This was set to be a big opportunity for Kakko to build upon the momentum he generated after the change of scenery, but both him and the Kraken will have to wait a bit to get things going again. Kakko worked hard while he was with the Rangers, and tried his best so succeed, and here's to the former Blueshirt having a speedy and successful recovery.
