The New York Rangers made a variety of trades in effort to improve on a roster that last year finished in last place in the Eastern Conference. While the Pavel Dorofeyev deal with the Vegas Golden Knights helped the Rangers bring in a top scorer, their biggest trade was with the Utah Mammoth. By trading away center Vincent Trocheck, the Rangers received defenseman Sean Durzi, center prospect Cole Beaudoin, and a 2027 third-round pick.
While Durzi helps the Rangers out immediately as a top four defenseman, Beaudoin could provide long-term help. It's been no secret that the Rangers' farm system needed an injection of new talent, especially forwards. Beaudoin immediately becomes one of their top forward prospects, and plays center, an area of need for them. Not to mention he had a huge productive season in the OHL.
In case Rangers fans needed to be sold on Beaudoin even further, look no further than Mammoth general manager Bill Armstrong's comments. While he does talk about his potential as a middle six forward in the NHL, Armstrong expressed his belief that Beaudoin could be a future captain for the Rangers in comments to The Athletic's Peter Baugh.

“A heart-and-soul guy that’ll probably be the captain there (in New York)," said Armstrong.
“He’s probably a third-line guy. But he might play on your second line just because he outworks people. He’ll block a shot with his face, he’ll hit, he’ll do anything it takes to win.”
That is some high praise for the prospect. Given the current structure of the Rangers, and Beaudoin's trajectory currently, the captain's role isn't going to be up for grabs for quite some time. J.T. Miller was just named captain last year, and he's under contract through the 2029-30 season. Barring a full-on rebuild, Miller is likely to remain in the captain's role for the foreseeable future, despite fan's criticisms.
But Beaudoin is expected to be a long-term fixture on the Rangers long beyond the 2029-30 season. The hope is that he can turn into the replacement for Trocheck as a second line center on the team who can win face-off battles, dish out hits, kill penalties, and block shots. He was considered one of the top athletic prospects in the 2024 NHL Draft class. A player willing to do whatever it takes to help the team win, besides scoring goals, is certainly future captain material.
Beaudoin is coming off of an incredible season with the Barrie Colts, where he scored 33 goals and dished out 55 assists in 54 games. He followed that tremendously productive season by putting up seven points in seven games for Canada's under 20 team in the World Junior Championships. Rangers fans certainly hope that Beaudoin can replicate his point-per-game-plus production, whether it's in the AHL in Hartford, or on the pro roster.
We'll see how Beaudoin pans out for the Rangers as the years go on, but as of now, there are high expectations for his potential on the Blueshirts.
