The inevitable has finally happened for the New York Rangers. After so many days stuck at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings, the Rangers were officially eliminated from playoff contention after a 4-3 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Rangers have now went back-to-back seasons without making the playoffs for the first time since 2018 and 2019. This isn't much of a surprise that we reached this point, considering how poorly the team played throughout this season. And that's with a new head coach in Mike Sullivan, who was supposed to get the most out of their current roster.
After the game, star Mika Zibanejad was asked about the Rangers officially being eliminated. Zibanejad said that while this isn't a situation any team would want to find themselves in, he knew this was coming based on where the Rangers sat in the standings.

Mika Zibanejad states the obvious after the Rangers miss out on playoff contention
"I don't think any team wants this. It's tough, but it hasn't come as a surprise in terms of this happening. It was a matter of time if you look at the standings and do quick math," said Zibanejad. "It still hurts. You play to win, and we're in the situation that we're in. It's obviously a tough one, but we get to evaluate more of it when we play all the rest of the games here too."
Zibanejad is right. It shouldn't be considered a surprise that the Rangers were eliminated from playoff contention. The Eastern Conference playoff picture has been crowded for the majority of the season. While the majority of teams were in the running, the Rangers fell out of it rather quickly. By January, Rangers general manager Chris Drury let the league know they were beginning a roster retool, with players being available in trades.
While losing and missing out on the playoffs does sting, these final 10 games will give the team a chance to evaluate the roster. In all likelihood, the roster overhaul will continue especially since Vincent Trocheck and Braden Schneider were not dealt at the trade deadline. We can't count out some surprise names being traded as well.
Perhaps most importantly, this gives the Rangers a chance to get a look at their young players ranked at the top of their farm system. They've gotten a good look at Gabe Perreault, who has been thriving on the top line with Zibanejad and Alexis Lafreniere. They also called up forward Adam Sykora, who received heavy praise from Sullivan after Wednesday's game. Fellow top prospect Drew Fortescue is expected to make his pro debut in the coming days.
If this season has shown anything to fans, it's that they need to embrace the youth movement and alter the roster heading into the 2026-27 season. Given how good the rest of the conference is, it might take a bit until the Rangers are back into playoff contention.
