DailyFaceoff recently launched a new trade bait board, and there are always a few interesting names. With the Rangers looking to load up for the postseason, there will be names coming up that New York may have an interest in, and one that sparked my interest immediately is a New York native. Whether or not he is available has been the subject of debate for years now, but the New York Rangers have a long-standing interest in this player.
I'm talking about Trevor Zegras. On Frank Seravalli's new trade board, Zegras sits 30th. Citing both the current situation and past rumors of the player's discontentment in Orange County, the Anaheim Ducks could look to move on from the forward. It leaves the door open for teams to come in for the former 9th overall pick from the 2019 NHL entry draft and look for ways to get more out of the reportedly disgruntled Bedford, New York native.
Zegras is one of the flashiest players in the NHL, known for his repeated ability to pull off the lacrosse move. However, his production has faltered in California, and a change of scenery could reinvigorate him. In 33 games this season, Zegras has goals and nine assists for 16 points. That's following up on his six goals, and nine assists in 31 games last year. However, the seasons prior had Zegras at back-to-back 60-point seasons.
Zegras has another year at $5.75 million after this one, but the forward hasn't enjoyed the best tenures in Anaheim. Zegras would fit under the cap in New York, filling the gap as both a centerman and a left-winger, and the Rangers can use their future assets to build a package to give Zegras a fresh start before his value rebounds. It's a great time to buy low, and Chris Drury can do great work.
