New York Rangers Snap Seattle Kraken Win Streak
Live from Climate Pledge Arena, the New York Rangers defeated the Kraken 2-0 thanks to stellar performances from Jonathan Quick and a late-game offense.
The Kraken four-game win steak is no more, with the New York Rangers snapping Seattle's four wins in a row with a 2-0 victory.
New York began a four-game road stretch with their win in the Kraken's home turf on Sunday. Goaltender Jonathan Quick got the nod for the start at the line, recording his second-straight shutout. Despite an uneventful first period, the Rangers were able to come out on top thanks to Alexis Lafrenière's seventh goal of the season and Zac Jones' first.
" I liked everything about the game. I liked Jonathan's game," head coach Peter Laviolette said. "It was really good defensively — [especially] making the decisions when it did come time to defend in the right place ... I just like the fact that we stayed disciplined with our game defensively and capitalized."
The first period saw eight shots on goal from the Blueshirts compared to Seattle's six. It wasn't until the 17:30 mark in the second period when Lafrenière was found all alone at the side of the net for an easy tap-in from Artemi Panarin.
The first goal only added another point to team-leader Panarin, with him now holding even stronger at 24 points with 10 goals and 14 assists.
At the 2:58 mark of the third period, defenseman Jones upped the lead to 2-0. The goal came off the rush, with Kaapo Kakko and and Will Cuylle each tallying an assist.
This was Jones' first goal of the 2023-24 campaign and the fourth of his career — putting him at 22 career points at 24 years-old. He was the 18th different Ranger to score a goal this season. The Rangers' 18 unique goal scorers are currently tied for the second most in the NHL.
"I'm trying to just get better each and every day, just trying to keep improving, keep being consistent," Jones said. "That's the biggest thing about being a pro, is trying to find the consistency level."
Quick was absolutely nasty in the net; easily being the highlight of Rangers' social media throughout the matchup. En route to his shutout, he logged 24 saves.
Quick is now just three victories away from becoming the first American-born goaltender to reach 400 wins in NHL history.
“You don’t really put too much thought into it. You’re honored to have those numbers," Quick said on needing three more wins to get to 400. "At the end of the day, as a goalie, you’re very dependent on your team in front of you. All those numbers really mean is I’ve played with some great players and teams that value winning more than anything. I consider myself very grateful and lucky to have played with all those guys over the course of my career.”
Five different New York players logged points in the 2-0 victory which also forced Seattle goaltender Philipp Grubauer to log 21 saves.
"I think we do a really good job of picking our spots," Jones said. "And we have a lot of really good players on this team, it's just about reading off each other."
