Olympic Roster Watch: Is Adam Fox’s Team USA spot under threat from rising stars?

Adam Fox was once considered a "lock" for Milan, but a month-long LTIR stint and a shaky 4 Nations performance have complicated his case. With the December 31 roster deadline looming and versatile defenders like Jackson LaCombe and Seth Jones surging, Mike Sullivan faces a high-stakes decision: trust his Rangers star's elite IQ or pivot to a healthy, shutdown alternative.

Adam Fox has been one of the premiere defensemen in the National Hockey League since entering the league back in 2019. Since his debut, Fox his third among all defensemen in points, and assists,
fourth in points per game, as well as seventh in even strength points, and that's not mentioning his Norris Trophy in 2021.

Despite the fantastic resumé, Adam Fox looks to be on the outside looking in according to The Athletic:

Should Fox Make The Roster?

Adam Fox has been scrutinized in the past year due to the Rangers struggles as a whole, people felt he's been sluggish defensively and his offensive touch is lost and the 4 Nations Face-Off showed that. And yes, Fox wasn't at his best during that tournament, but neither were players like Auston Matthews and Jack Hughes who are both locks for the team.

Prior to his injury versus Tampa, Adam Fox was arguably the best defensemen in the entire league and could very well been on his way to being the current Norris favourite. Among defensemen who have played a minimum of 300 5v5 ice time, Fox was fifth in his expected goals share (xGF%), 27th in his expected goals for per 60 (xGF/60), and 2nd in his expected goals against per 60 (xGA/60). On top of that, his basic offensive numbers were incredible being fifth in points per game, and second in total points among all defensemen!

Adam Fox was the Rangers best skater prior to his injury. Adam Fox was outscoring every defensemen in the league minus Cale Makar prior to his injury. Adam Fox was analytically the best defensemen defensively prior to his injury.

If Fox makes the team, it'll be just barely as an extra, and to be quite frank it's ridiculous someone as elite as he is still isn't getting the recognition he deserves.

The roster announcement is coming soon, and Mike Sullivan recently commented on the decisions yet to be made. Fans who watch the Rangers, and have seen how the team has played without him, know that the decision to be made should be an obvious one.
