Rangers President and General Manager Chris Drury has faced his fair share of criticism for how he's handled things for the team post Letter 2.0, mostly because up until Friday there wasn't much to inspire confidence that things were moving in the right direction.
Since Chris Drury sent out the letter:

NYR have traded:
- Panarin
- Soucy
- Carrick
- Berard
NYR received:
- Liam Greentree
- William Trudeau
- Some 3rds and a 6th
Retool not Rebuild.
With how things have gone around the league this week, Drury needed to make a statement that informed the fans of the immediate direction of the organization. Friday's blockbuster acquisition of budding sniper Pavel Dorofeyev, for a 2026 first rounder (acquired in K'Andre Miller trade, pick No. 92 in the third round tomorrow, and a top-10 protected first in 2028, sends a clear message, and it is one that fans should be excited about.
Dorofeyev is the exact swing Drury needed to take
The Letter 2.0 is going to be a years long process, and one that can't be rushed like Letter 1.0. Dorofeyev is an important start, and the good part about adding him to the roster is that he will only be 26 this October, and he's the perfect age to have an impact for this current iteration of the Rangers, and be an even bigger part of the next wave.
Dorofeyev has 92 goals and 57 assists for 149 points in 231 games since turning pro, and he is coming off back to back years of 35 and 37 goals. He also just scored 12 goals in 22 games for the Golden Knights during their playoff run. In addition to his top line numbers, analytically he's a player that should excite fans.

The other important part of this deal is that his contract is market value for the coming season, and it will only continue to benefit the team as the salary cap balloons even further.

Dorofeyev's addition is perfect for Gabe Perreault
The Rangers addition of Dorofeyev provides Mike Sullivan extra flexibility for how he wants to deploy his forwards in the top six. I would expect Dorofeyev to start the season as the Rangers' No. 1 left winger, and he will play with Mika Zibanejad and Alexis Lafrenière.
That will push Gabe Perreault down to the second line, a spot that will take some pressure off of him as he continue to develop on the right side. He spent a lot of time on the top line to end the season, and while that is impressive for him, the Rangers need to be cognizant of a potential sophomore slump that could come now that the league is more familiar with him.
Alternatively, the Rangers could swap Lafrenière and Dorofeyev if they wanted their 2020 No. 1 overall pick back on his natural side. Last season the Rangers weren't shy about moving forwards around to fit the team's needs, and adding Dorofeyev only gives them additional flexibility and potential upside.
It also now creates a situation where Will Cuylle will be playing with another offensive minded player, and that lessens the amount he needs to create, and he can focus on being a net front presence, a puck retriever, and someone who goes into the dirty areas of the ice to make a play.
Rangers have a clearer direction than they did earlier this week
There would be no point to acquire Dorofeyev if the Rangers weren't actively trying to get better, and this trade gives fans a sense of what the team is trying to accomplish. Said differently, the Rangers could have made a less impactful move had they intended to simply tread water next season. Had the Rangers made a trade for Mason McTavish instead, that would have represented the team hedging their retool/rebuild bets. McTavish is a fine player who will help the St. Louis Blues, but Dorofeyev is more of a sure thing at this point who is a clear fit for the top line.
Now that Dorofeyev is here, Drury needs to be smart with how he fills out the rest of his roster. He needs to nail the Vincent Trocheck trade to get pieces that can help the squad now and in the future, and he should also do the same with a potential Braden Schneider trade. The Rangers are signaling that they understand the direction they need to go in. Fans can start to get a better sense of what the plan is, and that is something that should bring the temperature down on Drury's seat.
He deserves credit for landing an impact player at a fair price via trade, and for getting a contract done that will only continue to age well. This is only a start, as adding Dorofeyev alone isn't enough to take this team back to the playoffs, but it is a good first big move that the team can continue to build off of.
