New York Rangers acquire Nic Petan from the Minnesota Wild for Turner Elson
Trade number two of the day sees the New York Rangers acquire Nic Petan from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Turner Elson. Depth forward allows the Rangers to bring Petan in to solidify the bottom six. The former second round draft pick of the Winnipeg Jets will see a new organization after struggling to break into the bottom six with the Minnesota Wild. In the event of injuries, Petan can slide into the forward core with no issues.
Since his draft, he's bounced around a little bit. Vancouver, Toronto, Winnipeg, Minnesota. and now New York. His struggles to find a home might be coming to an end if he is able to provide something to the bottom six. Petan has played in six games this season with the Wild, without finding the net. While he does have two assists, he's found the majority of his success in the minor leagues with the Iowa Wild.
Likely reporting straight to the Hartford Wolf Pack, Petan is going to find himself bolstering the organizational depth. As a depth option, it's a good pickup. Another good move from the front office and Chris Drury to pick out a new target for the AHL affiliate. It could not only help the Rangers, but also the Wolf Pack's pursuit of the Calder Cup. We know he's been fine in the minors, but as an NHL plug, he could be a fit.
So what did the Rangers give up? Turner Elson was a depth piece that has played in three NHL games. A lot of the front office will rather have Petan over Elson, which means that this is a move to allow NHL depth over AHL success. Minnesota do this to get another player that could help their AHL affiliate get far and pursue a Calder Cup of their own.
