Opinion: Matt Rempe can be so much more for Rangers

As the spark plug for the New York Rangers, Matt Rempe took the entire fan base on an unforgettable ride last season. But, aside from being an unstoppable force on the ice, can he be so much more than that in 2024-25?

The New York Rangers have found their enforcer in Matt Rempe. He is rough, tough, and as youthful as any 22-year-old fan-favorite of an original six team can be. But, can he be so much more than a bruiser, whose sole hockey purpose is to inflict pain and discomfort on the opposition?

Let's talk about it.

Alternate Uses for Rempe

Standing tall at 6'7", Rempe is practically as big as they come in the NHL. He has solidified his ability to lay the body and drop the gloves with just about anybody willing to go for a round of fisticuffs. But, can the Rangers use him in alternate ways, while also keeping that macho-man reputation?

On the ice, there are many ways to use Rempe effectively. Whether it is as a net-front presence, as only a few goalies are going to be able to look around his large frame, or as a bodyguard on a top-nine forward line. It seems to be that Rempe is more flexible than many of the other enforcers around the NHL.

It has been said by Rempe himself that he wants to continue developing a more complete and well-rounded offensive game. The mind wonders just how dominating he will be if he can play a fast, physical 200-foot game.

"I highly prioritize the skills and the skating. I’ve got to become a better player, so that’s what I’ve got to work on,” Rempe said. “I think I’ve taken big strides this summer with that."

The Rangers have something special in Rempe. A unique player with an unknown ceiling attached to him. He could be a great player, who lives up to the New York City spotlight. Or he can be a dud, who succumbs to the pressures of one of the most die-hard fanbases in the world.

My Two Cents

In my opinion, Rempe should see time on the special teams. It's crazy to think that having a dedicated fourth-liner takes a spot on one of the most important game instances but hear me out. If he gets powerplay minutes, presumably on the second line, let him play the left wing, slide him in front of the opposing goalie, and be an absolute nuisance. Alternatively, his long stick would be invaluable with a man-down on the penalty kill.

He is a slower body, at the moment. But, with all of that offseason preparation, he could have added longevity to his career if he strengthened his legs and skating ability with one of the best and fastest players in the NHL, Chris Kreider. Rempe could come into training camp as a completely different beast than he was a year ago.

Will Rempe elevate his game to another level in 2024-25?
