For all the talk about the New York Rangers making a massive goalie trade, the actual move was much less mind-shocking.

While the organization could still make a goalie move at the NHL level in the coming weeks, their latest transaction was one for AHL level.

That’s precisely what insider Elliotte Friedman reported during the latest edition of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, before the addition of James Reimer became official.

The notable insider dropped an intriguing insight regarding the Rangers’ next depth goalie move, and shortly after, the deal was done.

“One thing I did hear, I heard that they might be bringing someone into Hartford in the American Hockey League. They don’t have a lot of bodies right now. They have (Dylan) Garand and Spencer Martin, and Korpisalo, of course, is still hurt. I did hear that there’s somebody coming to their American Hockey League team, the Wolf Pack. And we’ll see where that goes over the next 24 to 48 hours.”

Friedman didn’t hint at a trade or a signing at the time, and we've since come to find out Reimer will be with the Wolf Pack on an ATO. Depending on how he plays, Reimer could enter the team's goaltending mix.

There aren’t a lot of depth goalies out there that could be available for trade. Unless the Rangers eventually pull off a trade like the Ottawa Senators did for a third-string guy like Jonas Johansson, the organization has Reimer as someone who will step into a bigger role at the AHL level.

Rangers moves after adding Reimer

Considering there’s a bit of an urgency to round out the overall depth chart, the Rangers could be looking at the UFA market instead of trading for a depth guy if Reimer fizzles out.

PuckPedia currently shows a select few UFA goalies, one of which has already retired, Connor Ingram, formerly of the Edmonton Oilers.

Perhaps the most intriguing name on the list is Petr Mrazek. The 34-year-old had a dreadful showing last season, appearing in just 10 NHL games, racking up a 4.07 GAA and an .858 SV%. Still, he is reportedly still looking to continue his playing career. And if taking on a role in the AHL could lead to a path back to the NHL, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Mrazek take that chance.

It’s worth pointing out that Mrazek wouldn’t likely factor into the Rangers’ NHL plans anytime soon. If anything, he would just add depth should the world fall apart in New York.

One other veteran goalies, Matt Murray, remains on the board. He last appeared with the Seattle Kraken, and in five games he posted a .922 save percentage and a 2.21 goals against average in just under 217 minutes of game time.

The Rangers got their first taste of adversity on Thursday after the New Jersey Devils erupted in the second period and chased Garand. Martin didn't do much better in relief, and with Reimer still on an ATO, that duo will need to get the job done until Korpisalo returns. But it isn't hard to imagine the Rangers still keeping their eye out for goaltenders, and we will just have to wait and see how things play out.
