Rangers bring back shield third jerseys when better options exist

The New York Rangers are bringing back their navy shield sweater for four games, but the look still pales in comparison to their iconic Heritage threads.

The New York Rangers wrap up their preseason on Friday, and the front office will finalize the opening night roster shortly after. Amid the roster cuts, the organization announced some notable aesthetic news: the Rangers are officially bringing back their navy shield third jersey, scheduling it to be worn four times this season.

The shield third jersey returns to the rotation

Calling this big news might feel hyperbolic, but the sweater itself features an oversized New York Rangers crest that has always felt somewhat out of place on an Original Six uniform. The Rangers last wore this design during the 2024-25 season. Last year, it was shelved in favor of the club's centennial throwback sweaters, which shared structural DNA with their most recent Winter Classic look.

The Rangers are about to print a ton of money by wearing these jerseys again, as the last time they were worn Adidas was the official sponsor/manufacturer of jerseys. Fanatics is now responsible, and the team is already promoting the "new" launch. Jerseys are something that people get very passionate about, and I happen to be one of those people.

Rangers have had much better third jerseys before

Many fans point to the classic 1990s Lady Liberty look as the gold standard of alternate sweaters. While it was a groundbreaking design for its era, the league's subsequent Reverse Retro iterations changed a bit too much of what made the original concept work.

My personal favorite will forever remain the Heritage jersey introduced in 2010 and worn through 2017. While some of that affinity stems from the sweater being synonymous with the most consistently successful playoff era in modern franchise history, the execution was flawless. The off-white accents, traditional block lettering featuring NEW YORK instead of the traditional RANGERS, and vintage coloring respected the club's history without overthinking the aesthetic.

Another new sweater is already on the horizon

The navy shield sweater won't be the only specialty uniform on Broadway this season. The NHL announced the launch of its 32-team "Hometown Remix" program back in August, representing Fanatics' first major league-wide alternate campaign.

Early concept renderings suggest New York's design will borrow elements from the heritage sweater, but with modern modifications that risk falling into the same trap as the Reverse Retro series.

At the end of the day they will only be worn for a handful of games... but it would have been nice if the Rangers could have just leaned into what has worked before instead of trying to get too creative. Their overall look is pretty classic and timeless, and thank could explain why they are trying so hard with each new third jersey and other specialty sweaters.
