Rangers’ centennial celebration hits another low point

This season was supposed to honor a century of Rangers hockey — instead, it’s becoming defined by the wrong kind of milestones.

The 2025-26 National Hockey League season is something the New York Rangers and their fans were looking forward to, as it was a time in which the team would celebrate 100 years of history. What has transpired is the franchise continuing to find ways to make history, and the Blueshirts reached a new low on Saturday evening.

Rangers are first NHL team since 1928 to be shutout five times in first seven games at home

The Rangers lost 5-0 at the hands of the New York Islanders, and it is very unfortunate that they were unable to build on the momentum of a solid win on Friday against the Detroit Red Wings. New York is now 7-7-2 on the season and 0-6-1 at home while simultaneously going 7-1-1 on the road.

Timing was once again an issue for the Rangers, and it feels like there were certain moments that just got to the team mentally and made things worse than they actually were. The Islanders were already up 1-0, and then scored with just 33 seconds in the period to make it 2-0 before heading to the dressing room.

The Rangers took a penalty late in the second period, and then Bo Horvat scored his second goal of the game to make it 3-0 just before both sides went to the second intermission. At this point a 3-0 lead felt very insurmountable, and despite putting 18 shots on goal, the Blueshirts were blanked in the final 20 minutes of play.

What's next for the Rangers?

The Rangers have a much needed day off on Sunday, and they return to action on Monday against the Nashville Predators. Nashville is 7-8-0 with 14 points on the season, and are 4-6-0 over their last 10 games played. On paper, it's an opportunity for the Rangers to get back on track and earn their first win at home. But that's what many thought about the Islanders, and you can see how that went.
