The Trade Deadline is fast approaching, and with that said, the New York Rangers have a tough decision to make. Currently, they are only two and four points out from both Wild Card spots, which are held by Detroit and Columbus.

Being so close to the playoffs could mean that the Rangers might look to be buyers at the deadline. There is one key trade chip that could be used, that many current playoff teams desperately need. He may only bring back a draft pick or two, but with an expiring contract and no real plan for his future with the Rangers, it may be time to part with a fan-favorite.

It pains me to say it, but Matt Rempe should be on the trade block come March 7.

Teams seek his physicality

It’s plain and simple, he is perfect for a playoff team that needs an enforcer. Sure, the Rangers could also use his grit and tenacity, but they have other players who are just as suitable. For example, Adam Edstrom and Sam Carrick have been dependable fourth-liners, and they have shown an ability to make a difference within the rules of the game.

This is the last time that the Rangers can get something in return for Rempe. I am sure, with his love of Rangers fans and the way this city has embraced him, he would come back to the Rangers for a minimal deal. But, do the Rangers want to risk that, when he may want to take his talents elsewhere for more money?

What kind of return

This is a tricky question, as Rempe’s value isn’t something you see on a stat sheet. He brings a physical and mean presence, almost vengeful. That is what teams are going to be trading for.

So what do other teams give up, an everyday NHLer, a high-value minor leaguer, or a mid-round draft pick and some future considerations? It is tough to say.

Can the Rangers front office continue to rip the hearts out of Rangers fans everywhere by trading another fan favorite?
