The New York Rangers have waited to see what general manager Chris Drury's plan for a retool is. Thus far, they've seen them trade away players like Artemi Panarin, Sam Carrick, and Carson Soucy, while adding Pavel Dorofeyev, Oliver Bjorkstrand, Alberts Smits, and more. But the big domino yet to fall was Vincent Trocheck, who had been on the trade block since the start of the calendar year.

There has been plenty of reporting surrounding Trocheck and what the Rangers are looking for in return. Drury had a high asking price for Trocheck and things got more complicated once Dylan Larkin requested a trade off of the Detroit Red Wings, adding another big name to the center market. But as it turns out, Trocheck was dealt before Larkin, and it happened on Wednesday during the start of free agency. And no, Trocheck is not remaining in the Eastern Conference.

Sportsnet NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported that Trocheck was traded to the Utah Mammoth. The return, according to Friedman, is defenseman Sean Durzi, forward prospect Cole Beaudoin, and a 2027 third-round draft pick.

On paper, this isn't the splashiest return for the Rangers for Trocheck, who fulfilled a variety of roles on the team. Whether it was scoring, playing on the penalty kill, or winning face-offs. The thing is, the Rangers had obvious needs, and this trade does address them.

At the end of the season, head coach Mike Sullivan said that he hopes the team adds a puck-moving defenseman in the offseason. He is getting just that in Durzi, who spent most of his career with the Mammoth/Arizona Coyotes. His best season arrived in 2023-24, where he put up nine goals and 32 assists for 41 points. This past season with Utah, Durzi posted five goals, 22 assists, a minus-12 plus/minus rating, and an average ice time of 19:16 in 60 regular season games. In the playoffs, Durzi recorded two assists, a minus-2 plus/minus rating, and 16:53 of ice time in their six-game first-round series against the Vegas Golden Knights.

Durzi is not the only defenseman the Rangers are adding. They are also acquiring Marcus Pettersson in a trade with the Vancouver Canucks. So their top four defenseman will feature Durzi, Pettersson, Adam Fox, and Vladislav Gavrikov. That is much improved depth for the Rangers.

Their other need was replenshing their farm system with forward prospects. They got Liam Greentree in the Panarin trade, but they needed more. Now, they bring in Beaudoin, who is Utah's seventh-ranked prospect, according to The Athletic's Scott Wheeler. Beaudoin is a 6-foot-2, 209-pound center who is coming off of an incredible season in the OHL. With the Barrie Colts, Beaudoin recorded 33 goals and 55 assists with a plus-40 plus/minus rating in 54 games. Those are incredible numbers that should have Rangers fans intrigued about his potential with the team.

Moving on from Trocheck was always going to be difficult for the Rangers, considering the roles that he served on the team. Plus, there would be debate as to whether or not they get a decent enough return for the veteran center. Looking at the Durzi and Beaudoin acquisitions, you can see why the Rangers agreed to terms on this trade. Now, we wait and see if they both pan out in New York, and if Trocheck shines in Utah.
