There are a few reasons why, after nearly 30 years, the Lady Liberty jerseys are still among the elite threads wore in NHL history. The New York Rangers really nailed it with this one, as people are still actively pursuing these jerseys to be a full-time fixture for the Blueshirts.
Bleacher Report recently published a piece detailing some of the NHL’s best alternate uniforms of all time. It shouldn’t shock you that the Rangers took the top spot.
Let’s go over why they have remained a timeless piece of this franchise’s history and whether it has enough spunk behind it to be a full-time piece.
Iconic piece of work
When you think of New York City, the Statue of Liberty is probably one of the first things that comes to mind. Throwing that on the center crest of a hockey team that has been around since the very beginning of the league, and it is iconic.
The darker blue look from top to bottom, with the deep red outline of Lady Liberty’s head really brings out all the details. When comparing it to the regular Blueshirts uniforms, you can tell that it is a completely alternate version, and that is what makes it unique.
Too much of a good thing gets stale
One of the only qualms with those Lady Liberty jerseys from the mid 90s is the amount of time it was used. But, as the saying goes, you can’t have too much of a good thing.

Recently, the NHL tried to go retro with their alternate jerseys. The Rangers responded to the thousands asking for them back with a new and updated version. It was nice to see, but it didn’t pack the same punch as the OG.

These jerseys from the mid 1990s and then into the new millennium, are a nice reminder of the way life used to be. In a world where everything is dumbing itself down to simplicity, a little bit of color and vibrance is good for the soul. As are these incredible jerseys, and the memory that goes with it.
No other team has been able to match it, and likely never will.
