The New York Rangers have continued their aggressive offseason shakeup by firing the coaching staff of the Hartford Wolf Pack. On Sunday, it was announced that head coach Grant Potulny was relieved of his duties along with assistants Jamie Tardif and former Blueshirt Paul Mara.

This announcement isn't surprising given how poorly the Wolf Pack have played in recent years. The decision to move on from the entire staff suggests the organization finally realizes that "Letter 2.0" cannot succeed without a complete overhaul of how they prepare their prospects for the NHL.

Potulny's tenure was underwhelming

Potulny entered the picture as head coach in Hartford fresh off seven seasons leading Northern Michigan University. A 2000 draft pick by the Ottawa Senators, Potulny had a short pro career before entering the coaching ranks, where he built a reputation as a winner. As a player, he was the captain of the University of Minnesota’s Golden Gophers, winning back-to-back National Championships in 2002 and 2003.

For whatever reason, that championship pedigree didn't translate to the AHL. Potulny had the unenviable task of following Kris Knoblauch, who left the organization to lead the Edmonton Oilers. In his first year, the Wolf Pack went 30-33-7-2. This year, the team regressed significantly, finishing with a 26-38-5-3 record and just 60 points, landing them in last place in the Atlantic Division.

Tardif and Mara’s tenure comes to an end

While Potulny was a relatively recent addition, his assistants had slightly more history with the club. Jamie Tardif was in his fourth season behind the Wolf Pack bench, previously serving as an assistant in the OHL. Paul Mara was in his third year with the staff, having joined as an interim assistant during the 2023-24 season. Mara, a veteran of over 700 NHL games, had previously spent five seasons coaching the Boston Pride in the NWHL (later the PHF). Their departures signify that the Rangers aren't just looking for a new head coach, but a completely new philosophy across the board.

The search for a teacher

The Wolf Pack’s coaching history has seen its share of ups and downs over the last decade. Following Ken Gernander’s long tenure, the team struggled under Keith McCambridge for two seasons before finding significant stability and success under Knoblauch for nearly five years. With Potulny now out after failing to maintain that momentum, the Rangers face a critical hire.

The organization needs to find a staff that views the AHL as a place to teach and develop, rather than a mere launching pad to a better job elsewhere. With the 2026 NHL Draft approaching and a top-five pick on the way, the opening in Hartford is a vital one. The hope is that whoever joins next can get more out of the existing roster and properly prepare the next wave of prospects for the bright lights of Broadway.
