The New York Rangers are shaking up their defense in the wake of an injury to Carson Soucy, and they are looking to a top prospect who was sent to the American Hockey League to start the 2025-26 season.

Rangers recall top defensive prospect Scott Morrow

Morrow was acquired in the K'Andre Miller trade from Carolina, and turns 23 this November. He has 16 games of NHL experience to his name, and spent 52 games in the AHL last season in which he scored 13 goals and tallied 26 assists for 39 points. He appeared in 14 games with the Hurricanes last season, and scored a goal and added five assists for six points. Offense is the biggest part of his game, something the Rangers could use on the back end, and he finished his NCAA career with 94 points in 109 games.

Morrow gives the defense a different look

The Rangers defense is a little one dimensional right now, and Morrow could change that in the interim.

Although this is an insurance move, you could make the case Morrow should be part of the lineup soon. Adam Fox is the team's lone threat on offense right now, and is a big part of what has made the power play successful in recent years. Morrow can jump in and be an option on the second power play unit, and will most likely replace Braden Schneider who has not looked comfortable in that role.

Vladislav Gavrikov has looked good early, but he's in New York to be a defensive force. Will Borgen is someone with promise, he generated a decent amount of offense after joining the Rangers last season, and that's because he's a good skater. A long-term move likely impacts Matthew Robertson or Urho Vaakanainen, two players who have never been really known for their offense.

The Rangers are making this move at a time in which they've been held scoreless at home through three games. New York is hitting the road for a pair of games in Canada, and it's not a bad idea to try and change the vibes ahead of the team's return back to Madison Square Garden next Monday. It was only a matter of time when they'd promote their top defensive prospect. They are going to Morrow today, and if they let him play, maybe that can spark something. Time will tell if that ends up being the correct decision.
