The New York Rangers played their first game of the season without Will Borgen on Saturday, and with his status in question for Sunday evening's game against Detroit, the front office has made a roster move which could lead to a top prospect's Blueshirts debut.
Scott Morrow recalled from Hartford Wolf Pack
Morrow has been called up from the American Hockey League, for the second time this season, and during his previous stint he was a healthy scratch serving as an extra body to be a just in case option. Although no official decisions have been made, it would be odd to bring him up again just as a precaution. Morrow has skated in 11 games for Hartford, and has a goal and an assist for two points. He tallied 39 points in 52 games (13 goals and 26 assists) for the Chicago Wolves as an AHL rookie last season.
The hope is that he gets an extended look to prove himself, because the Rangers could use his offensive abilities in the lineup. The Rangers also could use him to help the second power play unit, because to this point there hasn't been a natural fit to quarterback that unti. When you also take into account that no one has really claimed a spot on the third pair, now is a great time to give him a look.
Gabe Perreault sent down to make room for Morrow
The Rangers sent Perreault down to make room for Morrow, and he was the only player on the roster who was exempt from waivers and could immediately be assigned to their farm team. Perreault appeared in three games after his recall, and tallied an assist while averaging 13:09 per game. He skated 14:08 in his season opener, 12:43 against the Lightning, and just 12:37 on Saturday vs. the Blue Jackets. It's a tough spot for Perreault to be in, trying to find his way in the top six at the start of the season, and there's always the chance he will be back soon. Mike Sullivan had a good take on his play to date, and it speaks to how he feels about him as a player.
Sullivan with a pretty frank evaluation of Gabe Perreault since his recall earlier this week:

"We've seen some really good things he's done. Obviously he's got real good offensive instincts, sees the play really well. He thinks the game on a high level. I think where his…
What's next for the Blueshirts
The Rangers take on the Detroit Red Wings tonight at Madison Square Garden in the second game of a back-to-back. They will then head out on the road for a trip that opens on Tuesday in Vegas against the Golden Knights, continue on Thursday in Colorado against the Avalanche, and concludes next Saturday in Utah against the Mammoth.
