It has been nearly three weeks since we first looked at why Dylan Garand deserved a chance on Broadway... and the Rangers have finally made the correct decision. On Friday afternoon, the team announced that their top goaltending prospect has been recalled from the Hartford Wolf Pack.

While the "Letter 2.0" retool has been a central part of the conversation, the move also comes as the Rangers find themselves a little banged up in the crease. Neither Igor Shesterkin nor Jonathan Quick is expected to land on the injured reserve list... but with a busy stretch upcoming, the team is taking no chances with their depth at the position.

Timing is everything

The timing of the recall isn't a coincidence. The Rangers are staring down a heavy schedule that includes a back-to-back set this Sunday and Monday against the Winnipeg Jets and Ottawa Senators, a trip to Toronto on Wednesday, and another home game vs Chicago next Friday. By bringing Garand up now, President and General Manager Chris Drury is ensuring that Mike Sullivan has a reliable third option available in the event that the nagging issues facing the current netminders become something more serious.

It also provides the perfect window for Garand to potentially make his NHL debut. With two games in roughly 30 hours, it’s the logical time to get the 23-year-old into a game. Whether he gets the nod against a Winnipeg team the Blueshirts just throttled on the road, or takes the crease against Ottawa, the evaluation should finally be happening.

Proving the meritocracy exists?

Beyond the roster insurance, Garand's debut would be a win for the organization's credibility. Garand has been a model of reliability in Hartford lately, posting a .917 save percentage over his last 10 starts. Keeping him in the AHL while the Quick struggled to keep the puck out of the net was starting to send a bad message to the rest of the pipeline.

Rewarding Garand's elite play with a promotion would indicate that the Rangers are finally showing that performance, not just veteran status, dictates playing time.

A reason to show up and watch at MSG

In a season where the most important thing beside development is where the Rangers pick in the upcoming draft, Garand's arrival gives a reasonably checked out fanbase a legitimate reason to show up at Madison Square Garden this weekend. Seeing a top prospect make his debut in what would otherwise be a "meaningless" game is exactly what this retool should be about.

We’ve watched the Rangers trot out Quick as a backup for most of the season, and Spencer Martin got his chance while Igor was sidelined. Now, we hopefully are finally getting to see if the future of the Blueshirts' crease is as bright as his recent AHL stretch suggests. For now, we wait to see which game Garand gets, if any, but the wait for the recall itself is finally over.
