Players to Watch
Artemi Panarin
Artemi Panarin is ice cold, and the Blueshirts need him to get going in the worst of ways. The Blueshirts winger opened the season and went six games without a goal before scoring against the Montreal Canadiens and Minnesota Wild. He has been held without a point for the last five games, and has posted an overall line of 2-5-7 in 13 games which is well below his standards. It is possible the uncertainty of the future is weighing on him. But if the team is going to think about a potential extension, they need a proof of concept that Panarin can be a game breaker in Mike Sullivan's system.
Alexis Lafrenière
Lafrenière is a pretty polarizing player, and many have been unhappy with how he's performed this season. The NHL is very much a "what have you done for me lately?" enterprise, and the Blueshirts' 2020 No. 1 overall pick has a line of 1-5-6 through 13 games. At 5v5 he's been extremely snake bitten with just a 39.13 GF%, per Evolving-Hockey, but he deserves much better. Lafrenière is third on the team with a 60.53 xGF%, and fourth with a CF% of 55.52. It is understandable that fans want more, but it is important to remain patient just a little while longer. The process is sound, and the results should come soon. He's got four assists in his last five games, and could have had a few more in that stretch, and the hope is the goals will follow soon.
Will Cuylle
Cuylle had a very rough start to the season, but the Blueshirts' breakout player of 2024-25 is rounding into form. He enters tonight with five points (one goal and four assists) in his last five games played, and that includes the overtime winner over the Seattle Kraken. This season has the potential to be a transformational one for Cuylle, given the opportunity and ice time he's receiving, and tonight's contest against a tough divisional opponent is another important test for him.
