Coming off a disastrous 6-1 loss against the Buffalo Sabres on Nov. 7, the New York Rangers have bounced back by winning their third game of the season over Detroit on Saturday night.
After making nine saves in relief of starter Igor Shesterkin against Buffalo, backup goaltender Jonathan Quick made saves 37 saves, including 19 in the second period, against Detroit. The New York Rangers survived the barrage in their defensive zone, scored twice in 48 seconds and rebounded nicely from their worst performance of the season in the 4-0 victory over the Detroit Red Wings in the Original Six game.
Quick also earned his 396th career victory as a result of the Saturday night win — inching himself one step closer to becoming the 14th NHL tendy to reach 400 wins.
The first goal of the night came from Rangers (9-3-1) veteran Chris Kreider. He scored his 113th career power-play goal in the first period before Quick faced constant pressure in the second.
After Quick managed to keep the Red Wings scoreless, Jimmy Vesey and Artemi Panarin scored late in the second to provide the Rangers with some breathing room.
The final goal of the matchup was scored by Reilly Smith with a 157-foot empty-net goal with 3:43 remaining, finalizing the season sweep (3-0-0) — his third point in the last four games.
This marked Panarin's sixth multi-point game of the season. Additionally, Vesey's second period goal was his first career goal following his season debut Sunday against the New York Islanders.
A standout from the night was obviously Quick, making 37 saves in the 61st shutout of his NHL career (third in two seasons with the Rangers). in the second period alone, he stopped all 19 shots. This of course was before the goals by Vesey and Panarin 48 seconds apart changed the complexion of the game.
In the Rangers' season series sweep of the Red Wings, the Blueshirts outscored Detroit Red Wings 13-3, meaning 33 percent of their wins this campaign so far are against their Original Six rival from Motown.
