A moment that has been years in the making is finally here at Madison Square Garden for one of the New York Rangers' top prospects.

Ahead of today’s matinee against the Winnipeg Jets, 23 year old Dylan Garand took the traditional solo lap at Madison Square Garden, officially signaling his NHL debut. With Jonathan Quick sidelined (upper body) and the Rangers looking to snap a three-game skid, the organization is finally turning to the kid, on Kids Day of all days at MSG, who has been the backbone of the Hartford Wolf Pack for the better part of four seasons.

A long awaited and well deserved arrival

The solo lap is a great tradition for any NHLer to experience, but for Garand, it felt particularly significant. It's also extra special when you consider the starting goalie also leads the team onto the ice after warmups. Drafted in the fourth round back in 2020, Garand has seen his share of cups of coffee with the varsity squad, including a recall earlier this year and a stint backing up Igor Shesterkin last season. but the crease always remained elusive. Today he's finally getting his moment, and it is something fans have been wanting for quite some time.

While the Rangers previously opted for veteran placeholders like Spencer Martin when Shesterkin was injured in January, the Letter 2.0 edict has finally dictated a different path. Seeing Garand out there alone on the MSG ice, soaking in the environment, was the clearest sign yet that the Rangers are actually serious about evaluating their top assets. Such a move comes a day after the organization signed top defense prospect Drew Fortescue to his ELC, and he will also make his debut soon.

Earning the opportunity

As we’ve followed over the last month, Garand didn't just stumble into this start.. he forced the Rangers' hand. He arrived in New York on the back of a sensational stretch in Hartford, posting a .921 save percentage over his last 10 AHL starts. Lifetime he's appeared in 148 games over five seasons, and 17 playoff games during which he's posted a 2.21 goals against average and .927 save percentage.

Mike Sullivan noted after Saturday's practice that Garand's play had "given those guys a chance to win night in and night out," and today he gets to see if that translates to the NHL level. He’s stepping into a tough situation, the Jets are fighting for their playoff lives still technically alive five points back of a Wild Card spot, but for a goalie who was CHL Goaltender of the Year, led Team Canada to World Junior gold in 2022, and earned an AHL All-Star nod in 2025, Garand has never been one to shy away from the spotlight.
