Brief history of New York Rangers in outdoor games

2012 Winter Classic - New York Rangers 3, Philadelphia Flyers 2

The Rangers were victorious in their first ever outdoor game which was played at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. The game saw Mike Rupp as the unlikely hero score two goals, and the game featured drama at the end when Danny Briere was awarded a penalty shot with seconds remaining in the third period. Henrik Lundqvist came up big to stop him, and the Blueshirts made the fans in attendance and at home very happy.

2014 Stadium Series - New York Rangers 7, New Jersey Devils 3

The Rangers' second ever outdoor game was in the Stadium Series, an idea hatched by the NHL to involve more teams in outdoor games. The start of this game held at Yankee Stadium saw the Rangers fall in a 3-1 hole, but the team stormed back by scoring six unanswered goals. One of the memorable moments saw Derek Stepan score on a penalty shot, and it improved the team's record in outdoor games to 2-0.

2014 Stadium Series - New York Rangers 2, New York Islanders 1

This edition of the Stadium Series was a lot closer, and featured a nice goaltending battle between Lundqvist and Evgeni Nabokov. Brock Nelson opened the scoring at 18:33 of the second period, and Benoit Pouliot answered with a goal for the Rangers shortly afterwards. Daniel Carcillo scored the game-winning goal at 4:36 of the third period, and Lundqvist was named the first star of the game after making 30 saves.

2018 Winter Classic - New York Rangers 3, Buffalo Sabres 2

The Rangers were the away team for the 2018 Winter Classic held at Citi Field in Queens, for tax reasons, and both teams faced off in frigid weather that featured a significant amount of wind. New York got out to a 2-0 first period lead with goals from Paul Carey and Michael Grabner, and Buffalo responded with a goal in the second from Sam Reinhart and one from Rasmus Ristolainen in the third period. The game went to overtime, and the Rangers ended up on the power play. J.T. Miller was the hero with the game-winning goal, and it improved the team's record in outdoor games to 4-0.

2024 Stadium Series - New York Rangers 6, New York Islanders 5

The most recent outdoor game featuring the Rangers was one of the more exciting games they took part in, and it is something that fans think about with fondness. This game introduced Matt Rempe to the world, and his bout with Matt Martin is a moment that got the crowd rocking early.

The Islanders took a 3-1 lead in the first period, made it 4-1 early in the second period, and Vincent Trocheck added a pair of goals to make it 4-3 heading into the third period. Alexandar Romanov made it 5-3 early on in the third period, and the score remained that way for most of the period. The Rangers then ended up on the power play to make it 5-4, and Mika Zibanejad tied the game with another power play goal with under two minutes to go.

The game ended with an Artemi Panarin goal after the net was dislodged, and it was determined the puck would have entered the net had it remained on its moorings.
