Thursday was the first time in which Marcus Pettersson and Sean Durzi spoke to the New York Rangers media contingent following their respective trades, and both are very excited about the opportunity that awaits. Durzi in particular is setting a high standard, and his initial comments should be music to fans ears which gets them very pumped for the upcoming season. His energy is something that can help the post Letter 2.0 Rangers as they look to get back on the right track, and Durzi wants to be a huge part of that turnaround.
Durzi is setting a high bar and standard for himself
It might be a cliché answer, but Durzi's response to what he hopes to accomplish as a New York Ranger feels sincere.

It feels sincere because Durzi spoke to his expectations prior to this question, and his words about the role he can play for the Rangers was very thorough and encouraging.

"The beauty of the NHL, I think, is it's a fresh start every year. It's a prove yourself league, and you got to do it every single day. You look at last season, how you can grow on both sides. I think both [the Rangers and Mammoth] know that coming into the new year, it's a restart to start from zero, and that opportunity is pretty exciting. I don't think finishing near the bottom of the standings is ever the goal, but it's how you kind of learn from it and bounce back from that. You look at the roster, there's so many good players and it's such an exciting team. I just can't wait to be part of it. But again, we start from zero. Everyone starts from zero. It's a prove yourself league, and from Day One, we're going to do that."
Durzi's comments are breath of fresh air
It is nice to hear Durzi looking at joining the Rangers as a fresh start, and acknowledging the nature of this being a "prove yourself" league. That level of accountability and ownership should go a long way with the fans, and it is an attitude that will be helpful. Many fans grew frustrated with a group that "quit" and missed the playoffs in back to back seasons, and Durzi is one of the many new names joining to be a positive part of the turnaround.
He turns 28 in October, and the 6'1" and 196 pound defender is expect to slot in as the No. 2 right-handed defender behind Adam Fox. That should be a plus for New York, as Durzi being in a secondary offensive role is something the team sorely need on defense. Fox is elite at what he does, but him being the only consistent offensive contributor in that regard wasn't working.
Durzi looks at trade as a chance to take game to a new level
When speaking with the media, Durzi admitted the trade was a bit of a surprise, and it is something that is going to give him a bit of motivation. He had an extended answer, but this particular line stood out to me.

"I'm a big believer in proving those who believe in you right, and I think having the opportunity to prove this staff with the Rangers right is exciting for me. That's kind of a little bit of a kick of motivation in the middle of a long grinding summer, and I can't wait. It's a lot of excitement. I'm going to give everything I have."
The 2026-27 season will be Durzi's sixth as a pro, and his third NHL organization. He broke into the league with the Los Angeles Kings and contributed 12 goals, 53 assists, and 65 points in 136 games while skating 19:42 a night.
He then moved onto the Arizona Coyotes, and in year one he put up a line of 9-32-41 in 76 games while skating 22:43 a night. The last two years were with the squad that relocated Utah, and he had just nine goals, 29 assists, and 38 points in 90 games averaging 19:43 a night.
That last bit is something Durzi touched on, and he feels that injuries have held him back, but his most recent bit of play with Utah is where he wants to be.

Durzi's averaged 20:28 a game throughout his career. and I would imagine him being around that mark with the Rangers. The beauty of Durzi, and Marcus Pettersson joining, is that both are capable defenders that the Rangers will be not asking a ton of. Having Fox and Vladislav Gavrikov on the top pair is a luxury, and they just need Durzi and Pettersson to be good pros behind them,
In recent years the Rangers have not had a lot of offensive minded defenders who can move the puck, and Durzi's addition is long overdue. His mindset regarding the trade, the challenge that faces him, and where the Rangers are at as an organization are all things fans should be happy to hear.
His track record to date is something that the Rangers could benefit from, and to hear that he feels he's getting to a place where he can play with confidence and impact just makes this feel like it could be an underrated trade that pays off in a huge way.
